Executive Summary

-          In the TCM industry, the three most important sections are screening & planting of traditional medicinal materials, processing of concentrated Chinese herb granule and research on Formulated TCM.

-          Traditional Medicinal Materials (TMM)

-          China is profound in TMM resources. There are total about 12,807 TCM species in China, including 11,146 species of medical plants, 1,581 species of medical animals and 80 medical minerals.

-          The annual output of TMM is around 400,000MTs. The annual export of TMM is around 150,000~200,000MTs. China is strong in the export of TMM just because  of the low price. However China lacks of efficient system to ensure the TMM availability continuability and to ensure the product quality.

-          More Chinese large TCM companies are conducting GAP program to ensure the TMM availability. And central government encourages the plantation of TMM.

-          Formulated TCM

-          China has long history in the production, application and promotion of formulated TCM. The formulated TCM has rooted to the Chinese people as a convenient and cheap way in the actual therapy.

-          China has been producing over 40 forms of formulated TCM. Now they are developing new types like drop pill and injection.

-          The annual output of formulated TCM is 150,000MTs.

-          The export of Chinese formulated TCM has been maintaining at the level of 40,000MTs/year.

-          Althought China is the origin country for formulated TCM, China shares much less market in the international market comaparing with Japan and South Korea. The major reason is that China lacks of standard system to ensure the production, test, description, etc.

Chinese research and modern approaches to formulated TCM is governmental encourage and is aggressive. However there is a long way to go for Chinese formulated TCM to have competitive position in the world market.
