REPORT HIGHLIGHTS
Gum turpentine production in China to rank first in the world
China is the largest production country of turpentine in the world. Over 10% of Chinese turpentine is exported to overseas countries per year, and some major derivatives including pine oil, terpeneol, synthetic camphor, synthetic borneol and pinene are mainly exported also.
Gum turpentine supply in China to decrease in 2007
In recent years, Chinese turpentine industry developed stably with an average growth rate of 4.86% from 2002 to 2006, the output reached 93.1kts in 2006. Although the domestic market demand for turpentine keeps increasing fast, the output will decrease in 2007 because the supply exceeds the demand and the export is unstable.
Gum turpentine production in China to be disordered
In China the number of gum turpentine producers is big, and the production is disordered. There are about 173 active producers of turpentine in China, most of which are private and small companies. These companies are scattered in Guangxi Autonomous Region, Guangdong Province, Guangdong Province, Yunnan Province, Fujian Province, etc.

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2007 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted).
In China, there are two kinds of turpentine, and they are GT (gum turpentine) and CST (crude sulphate turpentine). Most commercial products are gum turpentine.
Gum turpentine
- Production
As of October 2007, 173 active GT producers have been found. And their total output in 2006 was XX tonnes, accounting for 98.17% of total GT output in China. Among all the current active producers, Guangxi Heli, Wuzhou Chemicals and Jinggu Forestry are the top three producers, whose output was about XX kts, accounting for XX % of total number.
Actually the output of gum turpentine is mainly affected by the output of gum rosin. The output of gum rosin will decrease in 2007 because domestic oleoresin is only tapped in the second half of May and the output of oleoresin will decrease due to large quantities of rainy. It is estimated that after 2007 the output of gum rosin will increase stably with average annual growth rate of 3.4% in the coming ten years. Thus, the output of GT will decrease in 2007, and it will keep increasing with a low growth rate in the coming few years.
- Import and export
China is a net export country of gum turpentine. About XX kts/a of Chinese GT is exported to overseas countries, and only a small amount of GT is imported.
In 2005, the export volume and average price of GT were XX tonnes and USD0.75/kg, respectively. Compared to that in 2004, the export volume decreased XX tonnes, and average price increased USD0.27/t. Most overseas consumers can’t accept the higher price in 2005, and they also had a certain amount of GT stock, which resulted in their great import decrease of GT in 2005.
The export price reduced in the first half of 2007. The average export was only about USD XX/kg which was about USD XX/kg less than that in 2006.
The export volume of gum turpentine has the trend of decreasing in the coming few years.
- Consumption
Gum turpentine is mainly used as solvent for direct use in the past in China, and currently only a small amount of gum turpentine is consumed as solvent. At present gum turpentine is mainly consumed in terpene resins, synthetic camphor, synthetic borneol, turpeneol and pinene and so on. Terpene resins is mainly consumed in domestic market, and the other derivatives including synthetic camphor, synthetic borneol, turpeneol , pine oil and synthetic perfume are mainly exported.
Crude Sulphate Turpentine
- Production
Various sources as of October 2007 suggest that 17 paper mills can make soft pulp with chemical method in China. After investigation, CCM finds that only 11 of them recycle CST in the production of soft pulp, and 6 of them don’t.
Since 2006 both the capacity and output of CST was smaller than that in the past. The output of CST was about XX tonnes in 2005 and it decreased to XX tonnes in 2006. The capacity of CST in 2007 is only half as that in 2006.
It is estimated that the capacity and output of CST will keep decreasing in the coming few years because fewer and fewer pine trees will be consumed to produce wood pulp.
- Import and export
The export volume of Chinese CST is quite small and most CST is consumed in domestic market. No CST is imported.
So far only three producers export their CST, and they are Qingshan Paper, Fujian Nanping and Nanning Phoenix.
Chinese CST is mainly exported to France.
- Consumption
CST can be applied directly, and used to produce derivatives, with the former consuming XX % CST and the latter XX % in 2007.
