Description:

The production volume of succinic acid in China accounts for 25~30% the global succinic acid output. Each year more than 1,500 tonnes of China’s succinic acid was exported overseas. The affect that China’s succinic acid brought to the world market cannot be omitted. Moreover, succinic acid is also comprehensively used in China and plays an important role in Chinese economy, including chemical, food, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries.

Now the major production methods in application are electrochemical reduction method and hydrogenation method. However, in the worldwide, the major method in application is fermentation method, which can significantly reduce the manufacturing cost. It means potential for the Chinese succinic acid industry.

Now though the export volume of succinic acid is fluctuating these years, however, it is still be very bright for it to develop. On one hand, it is because of the development of production method, and on the other hand, it is for the constant and increasing market demand from the downstream products.

It is believed that the future of succinic acid will be profitable. It is definitely necessary to grow up with China’s succinic acid industry.

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

- Production
The production volume of succinic acid in China accounts for XX~XX% the global succinic acid output.

The total capacity of succinic acid in China is XXt/a and XXt/a in 2006 and 2007 respectively. And in 2008 it remains the same as that in 2007. China’s actual output of succinic acid in 2005 and 2006 was XX tonnes and XX tonnes. In 2007, XX tonnes of succinic acid were produced in China.

Before the realization of fermentation method, the market price of succinic acid will rise slowly and slightly; but after the realization of fermentation method, the market price will probably go down because of lower manufacturing cost.

- Import & Export
Succinic acid export is very important to China’s succinic acid production, though the proportion has kept dropping since 2005. In 2007, about one fifth of China’s total succinic acid output is exported. In 2005 and 2006, it was XX% and XX% respectively. But China imports only a little succinic acid every year, no more than 20 tonnes in recent years. The succinic acid import volume decreased from XX tonnes in 2006 to XX tonnes in 2007.

From 2006 to 2007, the price of succinic acid increased from USDXX/kg of 2006 to USDXX/kg of 2007. The price increase was caused by Chinese government’s adjustment to the export tax rebate to many chemical products, including succinic acid, cutting it from XX% to XX%.

In 2006, the major export destinations are Japan, India, South Korea and Netherlands. In the whole year of 2007, the major export destinations remain the same, but a little different in order according to the export volume, namely, Japan, Netherlands, India, and South Korea.

- Consumption
Succinic acid in China is mainly consumed in chemicals, electronics, pharmaceutical and food industries. In the chemical industry, it is used to produce a series of derivatives, such as DMS, XX, XX, etc. In pharmaceutical industry, it is used as the raw material of succinimide, NBS, XX, XX, etc. In food industry, it is usually used in the production of disodium succinate, which is a flavor enhancer for food.

Chemical industry and pharmaceutical industry are the two main application industries. In chemical industry, soldering flux and surfactants are the main application fields. In pharmaceutical industry, four pharmaceuticals, including ferrous succinate, Succinimide, NBS and NCS, are the main downstream products.Of all the application fields, soldering flux consumed most succinic acid in 2006, about XX tonnes.
