Description:
Paraquat is a kind of non-selective contact herbicide, and its market is booming in recent years. China as the largest producers play more and more important role in the world’s market.
In recent years, with more and more labour force flowing into cities, most of chemical herbicides are accepted by peasants. The domestic market strongly support the fast development of paraquat industry, plus the oversea demand for paraquat, Chinese paraquat industry steps into prosperous stage.
But, there for still some barriers for the development of paraquat industry.
On the one hand, pyridine, the key raw material of paraquat technical, is the vital barrier for the fast development of paraquat, because its supply is insufficient. Jiangsu Redsun Group put into the production of pyridine to solve the problem of insufficient supply of raw material. What is the influence on Chinese paraquat industry? Will Chinese paraquat industry is changed by this?
On the other hand, some countries forbidden to use paraquat because of its toxicity. Therefore, the policies is very import to the development of paraquat industry. What is the attitude of government to paraquat? Will Chinese government also forbid to use it?

- Production
China is the largest paraquat technical and paraquat formulation producer in the world.
China’s current capacity of paraquat TK 42% is XXXXt/a, which can meet the total demand of the whole world. In 2007, China’s output of paraquat TK 42% is XXXX tonnes, and that of paraquat AS 20% is XXXXt/a, which is far less than its capacity.
Actually, the operation rate is low for both paraquat technical manufacturers and paraquat formulation manufacturers in China, because Chinese manufacturers can’t get sufficient raw materials and because of the fierce market competition.
There are 12 active paraquat technical manufacturers and XXXX active formulation manufacturers in China.
- Price
At present, the mainstream quoted price of paraquat TK 42% in China is about RMBXXXX/tonne, and that of paraquat AS 20% is about RMBXXXX/tonne.
Generally, the price of paraquat formulation from the manufacturers producing both paraquat technical and paraquat formulation is lower than that from the manufacturers only producing paraquat formulation. The price of paraquat AS 20% for retail is about RMBXXXX/tonne.
The price of paraquat is largely influenced by the price of pyridine. For example, the price of pyridine, the raw material of paraquat, increased from RMBXXXX/t in 2003 to RMBXXXX/tonne in 2007. As a result, the price of paraquat has increased accordingly during this period.
- Export
China’s manufacturers prefer to export their paraquat technical rather than to sell it to domestic paraquat formulation manufacturers, because one the one hand export brings more profit than domestic sales, and on the other hand, domestic paraquat formulation manufacturers are competitors to domestic paraquat technical manufacturers, since the latter also produce paraquat formulation.
China mainly exports paraquat to Southeast Asia and South America. Currently, only a few Chinese paraquat manufacturers register their paraquat products in Europe, USA and Australia.
In 2007, China’s export volume of paraquat TK 42% and paraquat AS 20% is XXXX tonnes and XXXX tonnes respectively, with the respective CAGR of XXXX% and15% from 2003 to 2007.
- Technology
Domestic manufacturers adopt the ammonia-cyanide (AC) process and methanol-cyanide (MC) process for paraquat production. The metal method has been washed out in China because of its severe pollution and low efficiency.
About XXXX% of domestic paraquat manufacturers have mastered the ammonia-cyanide (AC) process, the advance paraquat technology in the world. Meanwhile, China is making effort to improve the paraquat industry including pyridine production and additional agent technology.
Therefore, China has strong competitiveness of paraquat production technology compared with Southeast Asian countries and other countries.
- Demand
Paraquat technical is mainly used to produce paraquat AS in China, at the time, a large quantity of paraquat technical is exported to oversea market. There is almost no imported paraquat technical in China.
In 2007, the output of paraquat technical was about XXXX tonnes. Among them, about XXXX tonnes paraquat technical (paraquat TK 42%) was used to produce paraquat AS 20%, and the rest XXXX tonnes paraquat TK 42% was exported.
In 2007 the use volume of paraquat AS 20% was XXXX tonnes. In the north of China, paraquat AS 20% is used more in corn planting area. For example, Hebei, Henan and Shandong have the largest use volume of paraquat AS 20% in the north of China. In the south of China, paraquat AS 20% is used more in orchards. Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan have the largest use volume of paraquat AS 20% in the south of China.
