Description:
The fast increasing capacity of Chinese MA industry, together with the China’s endeavor to improve the production technology, has shown the world that China will play an important role in the world market in the future, even to become a global MA manufacturing base.
This report provides readers with both a panoramic perspective as well as an in-depth analysis of China's MA industry.
China's MA industry is characterised by the following features:
- MA capacity keeps increasing fast despite the fact that China’s MA supply is already surplus, for three reasons clearly explained in the report;
- Geographical concentration of China’s maleic anhydride production, mainly in Shanxi, Jiangsu, Hebei and Tianjin;
- Small import volume, fast growing export volume;
- As the price of raw material accounts for about 85% of total cost of MA, the price changes of the raw material, to some extent, decides the price trend of MA;
- Little change to China’s MA consumption structure these years, though the volume increases quickly.

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)
- Production of MA
In 2007, the output of MA in China was xxxx tonnes, accounting for xx% of China’s total capacity that year. China’s MA capacity as of Feb. 2008 amounts to xxxx t/a and it is estimated to reach xxxx t/a by the end of 2008.
The CAGR of China’s MA output from 2002 to 2007 was xx%, which can’t catch up with the capacity expansion speed. This means that the capacity of MA has been surplus in recent years, and this trend will continue in the future, because many enterprises are still expanding their MA capacity, or are constructing new MA production lines. The overcapacity will lead to increasingly intense market competition in the future.
27 MA producers adopt benzene oxidation method, which is the dominating technology in Chinese MA industry, and about xx% MA is produced by this technology in 2007. So the coking benzene is the major raw material of MA, which is different from oversea companies.
The average quotation of MA as of Feb.2008 is RMB10,200/t. The price of MA is decided by the price of the raw material, coking benzene.
- Import & Export of MA
China’s annual import of MA has been only xxxx tonnes these years. But recently, because of the increasing market demand, the price of MA rises very rapidly, which will be very likely lead to the increase of the volume of imported MA. The MA is mainly imported from Taiwan, Italy and Singapore etc. In fact, from the import record of MA, it is found that most of the imported MA is used in the production of resin, plastic and dye.
The export volume of MA in China has been increasing these years. Most of MA exporters are also the MA producers, whose export volume accounts for xx% of the total in 2007. The total export volume of the top 3 exporters, xx company, xx company and xx company, account for about 53.2% of the total these years. The major destinations for Chinese MA are xx country, xx country, xx country, xx country and xx country etc., MA to those destinations accounting for 57.59% of the total in 2007.
- Market of MA
The consumption volume of MA in 2007 was xxxx tonnes, and the CAGR of MA consumption from 2002 to 2007 was xx%. It is estimated that the consumption volume of MA will be up to xxxx tonnes in 2012 with the speed of 8% year by year. The fast increase of MA consumption is driven by the downstream industry, especially in UPR, Coating and BOD.
MA is mainly used in the production of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), BOD, GBL, coating, tartaric acid, lubricant additive, pesticides and succinic acid.
The largest consumption field of MA is UPR industry, which accounts for xx% of China’s total MA consumption in 2007.
