Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2007 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

• Production

At present, planting area in China is about 155.5 million hm 2 . Encouraged by the policies of subsidies and agricultural tax abolishment, the trend of reducing in crop planting was controlled and the area of crop planting increased gradually since the year 2003. This pushes the development of Chinese herbicides industry.

China has 775 herbicides producers now, 213 of them also produce herbicides technical. China herbicide industry is very prosperous in recent years, with huge demand from global market and the adjustment of China agriculture structure.

In 2006, the output of herbicides was xxx tonnes, which accounted for 70% of total capacity. The average annual growth rate of herbicides output was xxxx% from 2002 to 2006.

Glyphosate, acetochlor, butachlor, 2,4-D and paraquat are the major species in Chinese herbicides industry. The output of glyphosate accounted for xxxx% of total herbicides output in 2006. This also shows that China mainly still produces the old herbicides technical and formulation. Lack of new species and formulation is still the weakness of Chinese herbicides industry.

• Export and Import

From 2004 to 2006, the volumes of herbicides export & import both increased fast. Herbicides export is mainly attributed to the demand of oversea market. Due to the increasing demand of domestic market, China imports large quantity of herbicides that China can't produce or the supply is insufficient.

The glyphosate is still the major herbicides species for export, because Chinese glyphosate industry advantages in price.

• Demand of herbicide in China

The consumption volume increased from xxx tonnes in 2002 toxxxx tonnes in 2006. The fast growth is attributed to no tillage farming and minimum plough. Along with the transfer of young labors from rural region to cities and remove of agriculture tax, the consumption volume of herbicides will be more in future.

Glyphosate, acetochlor, butachlor, 2,4-D, and atrazine are widely used in China , and their consumption volume are over xxxx tonnes.

Rice, wheat, and corn, and soja are the major use of herbicide, and rice field account for about xxxx% of the total herbicide use.
