Description:

Glyoxalic acid is a kind of basic organic chemical material. Bourbonal and vanillin, made of glyoxalic acid, are widely used in the flavoring agent and fixative of cosmetics, essence of daily-use chemicals. Allantoin, another downstream product for glyoxalic acid, is used as healer for wound, additive for cosmetics and plant growth regulator. It is also used in the field of medicine. P-hydroxylphenylglycine, which is an important medical intermediate and is widely used to produce lactam series antibiotic such as syncillin and cephalosporin series medical product, is also made of glyoxalic. A downstream product of glyoxalic acid, p-Hydroxyphenylacetamide is widely used to produce Atenolol, a kind of hypertension medicine.

Driven by the huge demand of its downstream products, the recent output of glyoxalic acid in China is increasing all the time, and the product quality is also improving greatly. More and more overseas companies start to import glyoxalic acid from China, with export volume increasing rapidly. However, the export volume decreased to 6,125 tonnes in 2007, accounting for about 13% of China’s glyoxalic acid output, and that’s because the consumption of GA in domestic market was increasing rapidly, and as the capacity of GA in China is growing and the quality is improving, the export volume of GA will increase again rapidly. But the impact of this trend only limit to the large-scale glyoxalic acid producers that master the technology of high purity products, while for the minor enterprises, which can only produce ordinary glyoxalic acid, it is hard for them to get more benefits from export.

Affected by the price of its raw material and the supply and demand situation of its downstream products, the price of glyoxalic acid is undergoing great changes recently and it is estimated that the situation will continue for a long time.

Because of environmental reasons, the production situation will undergo even huge changes in the future, and many glyoxalic acid producers will have to upgrade their production line to ensure their competitive advantages.

The detailed and in-depth analysis of China’s glyoxalic acid production and market situations are discussed in this report.

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2007 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

• Production of GA

Glyoxylic acid industry has developed rapidly in China in the past few years. The actual output was less than 1,000 tonnes in 2002, while after 4 years' development, the output reached xxxx tonnes (calculated by 40%) in 2006.

Currently there are xxx active Glyoxylic acid producers in China with the total capacity of xxxx ts/a in 2007.

The top 12 producers produced xxxx tonnes Glyoxylic acid (calculated by 40%) in 2006, accounting for 76.51% of the total output in the domestic market. Shanghai Guangyu and Taixing Yuandong are the top two players of GA in China , and their actual outputs of GA reached xxx tonnes and xxx tonnes, accounting for 15.27% and 9.32% of the total output respectively in 2006 .

The GA production mainly concentrates in Hubei , Hebei , Jiangsu and Shanghai , whose GA production accounts for 76% of the total GA output (calculated by 40%) in China in 2006.

 • Export & Import of GA

The import volume of GA is reducing sharply these years and the quantity can be considered negligible comparing with the vast actual output and import volume. Meanwhile the export volume of GA kept increasing rapidly. The export volume was 7,728 tonnes in 2006 and increased by 9.94% over the previous year.

Shanghai Kangjian is always the top exporter of GA, and its export volume was xxxx tonnes accounting for xxxx% of total export volume in 2006.

Taixing Yuandong and Shanghai Guangyu are the top two active GA manufacturers whose products were exported in the past few years, and their export volumes of GA account for about xxxx% of the total in 2006 .

Chinese GA is mainly exported to USA , Spain , Germany and so on. In 2005 and 2006 the total export volume to these three countries was xxxx tonnes and xxxx tonnes respectively, accounting for xxxx% and xxxx% of China 's total export volume. USA is the largest export destination. Its export volume was xxxx tonnes in 2005 and it increased to xxxx tonnes in 2006. The export volume will keep increasing in the coming few years.

 • Market of GA

About xxxx tonnes (calculated by 40%) of GA is consumed in China in 2006.GA is mainly used to produce Vanillin, P-hydroxylphenylglycine, DL-P-hydroxy Phenylhydantoin, Allantoin, 2-hydroxyl-phosphine acetic acid and other chemicals. The fast increase of GA consumption is driven by the downstream industry, especially in Vanillin, P-hydroxylphenylglycine, DL-P-hydroxy Phenylhydantoin and Allantoin.

The consumption volume of GA in Vanillin accounts for xxxx% of the total amount. The second largest GA consumption field is P-hydroxylphenylglycine, which accounts for xxxx% of the total.

• Technology

xxx of the xxx active GA producers in China adopt the oxaldehyde oxidation method to produce GA and the main raw materials include oxaldehyde and nitric acid. The rest one GA producer adopts the oxalic acid electroreduction method to produce GA.
