Description:

As a major glucosamine supplier in the world, China exports about 80% of its glucosamine output to overeseas market, with the major destinations being the US, Europe, South Korea, Japan and other countries and regions. In recent years, China's glucosamine output and export have been growing very fast both with the annual growth rate of about 10%, and the capacity grows even faster than the output. The production of glucosamine in China is gradually concentrating to big players and the coastal areas. And in recent two years, the number of manufacturers has been decreasing, while the average capacity of each producer in China has a considerable increase, 90% more in 2008 than that in 2005.

The glucosamine industry in China is highly subject to the supply of raw materials. In this report, the raw materials supply situation is investigated. In China, glucosamine is mainly produced from shell of shrimp & lobster, and chitosan is mainly produced from the imported raw materials, snow crab shell. Research on Chitosan is included in this report.

The basic data related to import/export, output, capacity, consumption, demand, etc.are presented in this report and the active manufacturer profiles are also included. The data are breakdown by GAH, GAS and NAG.

A benchmarking study of Glucosamine in China is also included in this report. Cost analysis on different species of GAS, GAH and NAG are presented. This report includes the theoretical analysis and the case study on the manufacturer Zhejiang Golden-shell, the leading manufacturer of Glucosamine in China.

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

- Production

As of Apr. 2008, there are xx active glucosamine manufacturers in Chinese Mainland. However, in 2005, there were xx glucosamine's in Chinese Mainland. Most of these xx producers are located in China’s coastal regions. For example, xx of them are located in Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province and Shandong Province, all being provinces in China’ s eastern coastal regions.

As of Apr. 2008, the total capacity of China’s active glucosamine manufacturers is xxxx t/a, of which the capacity of GAH, GAS and NAG is xxxx t/a, xxxx t/a and xxxx t/a respectively. By percentage, it is 70%, 26% and 4% respectively. The total capacity in 2005 was just xxxx t/a.

The concentration degree of glucosamine production in China has been increasing in recent years. The capacity of each producer in average in 2008 is xxxx t/a, growing by 90% than that in 2005, which was was just xxxx t/a.

The actual output of glucosamine in Chinese Mainland is xxxx tonnes in 2007 and xxxx tonnes in 2006.

As of Apr. 2008, there are xx active chitosan manufacturers in Chinese Mainland, of which 20 producers also produce glucosamine's at the same time. They are mostly located in China’s coastal regions too.

- Market

About xx% of the glucosamine products produced in China are exported, mainly to North America, Europe, and Japan. Customs Statistics shows that the export of glucosamine in 2007 is xxxx t, including xxxx t GAH, xxxx t GAS and xxxx t NAG.

The Chinese domestic glucosamine market is gradually mature. And Chinese glucosamine manufactures are planning to make more efforts to explore the domestic market. Tens of drugs and health products with glucosamine as the major active ingredient have been developed out and introduced into the market in China in recent years.

Now the supply of chitin, the raw material for glucosamine production, is the key problem that restrains the development of glucosamine. So to find more chitin resource is a very urgent task for the Chinese manufacturers, or they will have to pause or stop glucosamine production.

- Benchmarking

The production technology of glucosamine has a little improvement in recent years, while the price of raw material increases fast, especially the shell of shrimp and crab. As a result, production cost of glucosamine in 2008 increased fast compared with that in 2006.

Along with the increasing production cost of glucosamine's, the profits of glucosamine's producers reduce gradually. Some small producers have to quit the market of glucosamine's
