Report highlights
It is confirmed that the total production capacity of oleic acid as of Feb 2008 is 267,800t/a, and the oleic acid producers are distributed in Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shandong Sichuan, Xinjiang, Guangdong, Hubei, Shanxi, Hebei and Shanghai.
As of Feb 2008, there are 14 active producers of dimer acid in China with total capacity of 70,000t/a, most of which are distributed in East China.
Fujian Provincial Institute of Chemical Industrial Science & Technology researched and developed the multi-tower continuous vacuum distillation equipment successfully and this equipment has been widely adopted by producers all over China.
There are many dimer acid production technologies in China, and the most popular ones include thermal polymerization method and bleaching earth catalytic polymerization method.
Cheap and available raw materials, such as acid oil, the byproduct from the production of rapeseed oil, palm oil and cottonseed oil, are very important for most fatty acid producers in China, which may become a new way for the development of fatty acid industry in China.
The main raw materials of dimer acid are some kinds of unsaturated fatty acids, such as tall oil fatty acid, rapeseed oil fatty acid, soybean oil fatty acid, cottonseed oil fatty acid and sunflower oil fatty acid. In the 1990s, most producers adopted the refined oleic acid to produce dimer acid, and the quality of dimer acid was greatly improved.
In recent years, Chinese government is planning to bring forward several positive measures to encourage the production of biodiesel, and it has set a goal that the national output of biodiesel should reach 200 million tonnes in 2010. So in the future, some oleic acid and dimer acid producers may face the difficulty of no enough acid oil. And the purchasing competition of acid oil may become even more furious.

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)
Oleic acid
xxxx manufactures in China have been found claiming to be oleic acid producers from the internet, but after CCM’s investigation, 5 companies are not able to be contacted. Among the rest xxxx companies, xxxx producers have been confirmed to be active, xxxx have stopped production, xxxx are potential enterprises and xxxx don’t produce oleic acid for the moment but may restart production in the future. The total production capacity as of Feb 2008 and actual output in 2007 of oleic acid are confirmed to be xxxx t/a and xxxx tonnes respectively.
Currently the main raw materials of oleic acid in China include vegetable oil, oil soapstock and acid oil. Because of the competition of biodiesel, the supply of acid oil is quite tense for the oleic acid industry in China now.
The import volume of plant oleic acid was xxxx tonnes in 2007, including xxxx tonnes in the first half of 2007 and xxxx tonnes in the second half of 2007. The largest monthly import volume of plant oleic acid was xxxx tonnes in Aug.2007.
In 2007, the apparent consumption volume of oleic acid was xxxx tonnes, and dimer acid and alkyd resin are its main application fields in China, with the proportion of xxxx % and xxxx % respectively.
In 2007, 98.9% of cottonseed oleic acid was used to produce dimer acid and 85.6% of soybean oleic acid was used to produce alkyd resin. Apart from that, cottonseed and soybean oleic acid were also used in Oleylamide.
Dimer acid
As of Feb 2008, there are xxxx active producers of dimer acid in China, most of which are distributed in East China. Of all the producers, Jiangxi Yuanda has the largest production capacity as of Feb 2008 and actual output in 2007, which reached xxxx t/a and xxxx tonnes respectively.
Most producers adopted the oleic acid which is produced by the soapstock of vegetable oil and acid oil to produce dimer acid. Now most of the dimer acid are made from cottonseed oleic acid, with better quality than other materials.
The import volume of dimer acid was xxxx tonnes in 2007, among which xxxx tonnes were imported in the first half year, and xxxx tonnes were imported in the second half year. The biggest monthly import volume was xxxx tonnes in November 2007.
In 2007, the apparent consumption of dimer acid was xxxx tonnes, and most of dimer acid was used to produce polyamide resin, which consumed xxxx tonnes of dimer acid in 2007, accounting for xxxx% of the total.
