Description:

Although chitosan industry in China has developed for about twenty years, it is still immature. There are few large-scale enterprises, and most are township enterprises with unscientific production and management. There is no strict and uniform product standard either, which results in some confusions in the chitosan price in China’s market.

What’s the production cost in China’s chitosan producers? What constitute this production cost? What’s the profit margin to Chinese producers?

In order to find the answers to these questions, CCM carries out this benchmarking analysis to China’s chitosan production at present.

After various chitosan production methods are introduced briefly, the report dwells on the most popular method for the benchmark of chitosan production cost and profit in China by finding answers to the following questions:
- What raw materials are involved in Chinese chitosan production?
- What is the cost structure of the raw materials?
- How does the cost structure of the raw material differ for the production of different specifications of chitosan, namely industrial grade chitosan, including 70% DAC degree and 85% DAC degree, food grade chitosan, including 90% DAC degree and 95% DAC degree?
- What are the manufacturing cost structures for different specifications of chitosan?
- What is the management cost?
- What’s the production cost from chitin to chitosan? And how does it differ from that with shrimp and crab shell as the starting material?
- What’s the profit in Chinese manufacturers?

This report also provides a case analysis, with Jiangsu Xincheng as the object.

With this report, the reader will have a clear picture of China's chitosan production level and know where China is weak and where it is strong in chitosan production.

Executive Summary

- Production situation

Chitosan industry has come in an upsurge all over the world.

CCM has contacted about 60 manufacturers, among which 31 are active. There are still other active manufacturers in China not contacted. Most manufacturers are located in places where there are not only have abundant piscatorial resources but also mature chlor-alkali industry, such as Shandong, Liaoning, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province.

- Technology

There are three techniques to produce chitosan in China, including chemical, microwave and bio-enzyme method. The most popular method is chemical method, which takes advantage of diluted acid & alkali to deprotein and concentrated alkali to deacetylate. However, some problems exist in this method….

In order to save the cost, chitosan producers usually purchase shrimp and crab shell to produce chitosan, by which they can comprehensively utilize acid and alkali, decrease the cost of wastewater’s treatment, and control the product’s quality from the source of raw material. Only a few manufacturers use chitin as raw material.

- Production cost

According to CCM’s analysis on cost structure of chitosan production, shell material takes up over XXX% of the raw material cost, even more than XXX% of the total raw material when producing food grade chitosan. The total cost of chitosan varies from RMBXXX/kg to RMBXXX/kg, due to different shell materials.

Table 1 Estimation on total production cost of chitosan (Unit: RMB/kg chitosan product Time: June-06)…

Table 2 The production cost from chitin to chitosan (Time: June of 2006)…

- Profit in Chinese enterprises

By communicating with manufacturers, CCM acquainted that the price of industrial grade of chitosan fluctuated around RMBXXX-XXX/kg in Chinese market in June of 2006, and the price of food grade varied from RMBXXX/kg to RMBXXX/kg or even higher.

According to CCM’s estimation, the profit of industrial and edible chitosan in Jiangsu Xincheng is RMBXXX/t and RMBXXX/t respectively, which is close to the profit of RMBXXX/t most manufacturers alleged during CCM’s telephone interviews.
