Description:
Carbon Black is an important industrial chemical that is widely applied to industries of rubber , plastics, coating, ink, battery, etc. Among these areas, rubber industry is the most important area, consuming around 90% of the world's total carbon black.
In recent years, Chinese carbon black industry has developed very quickly. In the past five years (from 2003 to 2007), Chinese carbon black output soared with CAGR of 23.32%. At the same time, Chinese carbon black production capacity has also sharply mainly due to the quick expansion of many carbon black manufacturers. During this period, carbon black import in China decreased with CAGR of 5.08%, while the export increased with CAGR of 26.55%.
What is the production situation of carbon black in China? Where does the competitiveness of Chinese carbon black manufacturers lies? What are the reasons behind the increasing output? Which factors are driving the export of Chinese carbon black to grow? This report will disclose the answers to them and provide in-depth analysis.
Car industry consumes almost 80% of the total carbon black output in the world. Although the development of car industry in U.S.A. and EU has slowed down, car industry is booming in Asia. What is the prospect of Chinese car industry? And how does car industry influence Chinese carbon black industry? This is also one of the main parts in this report. By reading the report, you will also get a clear carbon black consumption picture in China.
On the other hand, the world market leaders of carbon black have been attaching great importance to the processing technology of carbon black. Every year, they spend huge funds improving their technology of carbon black production. So what is the technology situation of carbon black in China? What kind of progress has been made in Chinese carbon black technology? This report also leads you to the technological world of Chinese carbon black.
The global demand of carbon black is estimated to grow at CAGR of 4.2% from 2008 to 2012. This report conducts forecast on China's future production of carbon black, including both quantitative forecasts and qualitative forecasts for the coming five years. Furthermore, top 40 manufacturers of carbon black in China are also profiled in this report.

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted).
- Production & producers
There were xxxx active carbon black manufacturers up to May, 2008, including xxxx rubber carbon black enterprises and xxxx special carbon black enterprises. In general, Chinese carbon black producers are large in quantity, but small in single production capacity.
By 2007, there were xxxx foreign and Taiwan/Hong Kong invested carbon black companies in China, whose production capacity constituted xxxx % of the total in China. The top xxxx are Shanghai Cabot, China Rubber (Maanshan), Qingdao Degussa and CCBI. Their total production capacity was xxxx kt/a in 2007, accounting for about xxxx % of the total production capacity in China.
Chinese carbon black output in 2006 and 2007 reached xxxx kt and xxxx kt respectively. It indicates that Chinese carbon black production increased greatly in 2007 over the previous year, with the fast development of the downstream industries. By May 2008, the carbon black production capacity of China has reached as high as xxxx kt/a, xxxx kt/a higher than that of 2007.
Factors influencing carbon black production in China can be listed briefly as: raw material supply, consumption, technology developments and government policies.
Currently, the biggest problem of Chinese carbon black production, which is also the biggest characteristic of Chinese carbon black industry, is the tensional supply of raw material tars. All the three main raw materials are facing heavy shortage in Chinese carbon black industry. The price of coal tar in 2007 went on increasing due to the price increase of international crude oil. This made many Chinese carbon black producers shut down their production.
The problems of carbon black production can be listed briefly as: enterprise size, laggard processing technology, high production cost, waste gas utilization and environment protection.
- Technology
Currently, the xxxx kt/a wet method carbon black process is relatively mature in China, as well as corresponding equipments. Besides, the xxxx kt/a wet method carbon black production line have also been put into use by some large carbon black manufacturers. The production capacity of single furnace have been improving, while saving energy and protecting the environments.
China Rubber Group Carbon Black R&D Institute (CCBI) and Tianjin Dolphin Carbon Black Co., Ltd. (the former Tianjin Carbon Black Factory) contributed most to Chinese carbon black technology developments.
- Import & Export
During 2002~2003, Chinese carbon black import increased greatly, due to mainly the overproduction of Asian carbon black and the keeping strong of RMB. After 2003, Chinese carbon black import began to shrink, while the export started to grow quickly.
In 2007, the import volume of carbon black in China decreased to xxxx t with price increasing from USD xxxx /t to USD xxxx /t, much higher than that in 2004, while the export volume increased to xxxx t with price increasing from USD xxxx /t to USD xxxx /t. The gap between the prices of imported carbon black and domestic carbon black was smaller than before.
- Consumption
Carbon black is mostly consumed in rubber industry, plastic industry, coating industry, inks industry, battery industry and some other special areas. Total apparent consumption of carbon black in China was about xxxx kt in 2006 and xxxx kt in 2007 respectively, greatly higher than that of 2005. This was mainly driven by the booming of the Chinese tyre industry and car industry. More than 85.00% carbon black is consumed in rubber industry in recent years.
Key factors influencing the consumption of carbon black can be listed as: growth of GDP, development of car industry, development of roads system, development of Chinese international trade, price, and government policies.
- Price
Chinese prices of carbon black have been in big differences at the same time in recent years, although large producers such as Tianjin Dolphin have been stable comparatively. In 2007, the mainstream prices of carbon black increased to RMB xxxx~xxxx /t, driven by the short supply and the price increase of the raw materials.
- Forecast
By anticipation, Chinese carbon black industry will achieve following in 2012:
It is estimated that the output of carbon black will be up to xxxx kt/a with the CAGR of xxxx % from 2008 to 2012. This was mainly due to the rapid expansion of carbon black production capacity in China.
It is anticipated that the consumption of carbon black will reach xxxx kt/a with CAGR of xxxx % from 2008 to 2012. The fast increasing tyre industry and car industry will play an important role and consume most carbon black.
There will less and less import of carbon black and the export of carbon black will grow quickly. And it is estimated that the import and export of carbon black will be about xxxx kt/a and xxxx kt/a by the year of 2012.
