Description:

This research mostly focuses on astaxanthin industry development,particularly its research development in China.
Chinese astaxanthin industry still stays at the initial phase in 2005 and its commercial production started only 2 years ago. We have found that only 2 producers are active and 2 have stopped the production. For some reasons, a lot of companies stopped their astaxanthin production in recent years. There are 3 potential producers:
- Zhejiang NHU Co., Ltd.;
- Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
- Hubei Guangji Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
The research of astaxanthin is active in China, since its beginning in 2003.A profound review of technology research development from 1993 to 2004 is presented by years. The major active research institutes include:
- Sun Yat-sen University (Guangzhou);
- South China University of Technology;
- Zhejiang University of Technology;
- Jiangnan University;
The current research on astaxanthin mainly focuses on three areas:
- Cultivation of Haematococcus plusvialis;
- Strain screening for Phaffia Rhodozyma fermentation;
- Parameters for fermentation of Phaffia Rhodozyma;

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2005 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

There are two major factors influencing the development of astaxanthin in China:

The Chinese companies faced the dilemma in choosing the right rout for the commercial production of astaxanthin. The Chinese companies started up with the shrimp extraction pathway and then were once optimistic Haematococcus plusvialis pathway. However they found that the Haematococcus plusvialis need strict environment and there are many difficulties face in the accumulation and the post treatment. So now the Chinese people turn their eyes on Phaffia Rhodozyma pathway. The chemical synthetic pathway was once regarded as a good breakthrough however the strict regulation on the application of astaxanthin “extinguish” the enthusiasm, as the astaxanthin made by this pathway has to be used in the feed industry but the regulation is also about the application of astaxanthin in the feed industry.

On the other hand, the strict regulation on the application of astaxanthin is a big obstacle for the astaxanthin application and thus depressed the enthusiasm of Chinese companies for its future trend.

However, the Chinese people never end up their endeavors to find out the good approach for the possibility of commodity production of astaxanthin in China.

The Chinese research on astaxanthin has been started since 1993. The current research mainly focuses on three areas:
 Cultivation of Haematococcus plusvialis
 Strain screening for Phaffia Rhodozyma fermentation
 Parameters for fermentation of Phaffia Rhodozyma

The active researchers in China include:
...

The potential producers of astaxanthin include:
...

The commercial production of astaxanthin started in 2003, however has not grown into the “big” industry as other chemicals in China.

By March 2005, the commercial production of astaxanthin is still at the stage of beginning.

Character of CCM' Report:

This multi-client report provides a comprehensive study on the researched subject in China, from aspects of production, technology, import & export, consumption & end uses, etc.

>>
All the producers in China, either active or idled or potential, have been sourced and contacted. Their situation has been verified and compiled as in the appendix.
>>
The competitiveness of Chinese production has been discussed in order to uncover the mystery of ever-increasing capability of Chinese manufacturing.
>>
The import & export analysis for the situation in the recent three years has been conducted.
>>
The consumption pattern of the researched subject has been carried out in order to breakdown the end uses into different segments. The major end users under each major end use segments have been identified.
>>
The scientific methodology has been employed to conduct the quantitative forecast on this subject in the future 5-10 years.

The aim of this report is to provide powerful assistance to the strategy group and the management team in making correct decision as how to penetrate the ever-increasing China market and how to catch the maximum commercial opportunities. The report is formulated independently by CCM’s professional market researchers, based on the first-hand and primary data which are analyzed by scientific methodology, confirmed with both manufacturers/end users/traders and legal authorities, and presented in a logic way.
