Description:

Acetochlor is the second largest herbicide only second to glyphosate in China. But different from glyphosate, the majority of Chinese acetochlor technical is converted into formulations for domestic market.

The application of acetochlor in herbicide mixed formulations is increasing. About 26.3% of mixed herbicides contained acetochlor in 2003. The ratio of acetochlor mixed formulation to single formulation during the period of 1992-1996 is 2.7:1. It is 4.8:1 during the period of 1997-2000, and 5.9:1 during the period of 2001-2003.

In recent years, the production of acetochlor, both technical and formulations, has been hampered because of high production cost, poor profit and planting decrease of corn and soybean. Many acetochlor producers stopped production in the past few years. There were only 17 active producers of acetochlor as of August 2004.

The production of acetochlor, both technical grade material and formulations, is large. But the annual output kept maintaining at about 30,000-35,000t/a in China.

Since 2000s, the percentage of acetochlor in herbicide market has increased rapidly because of its price advantage.

Glance at Acetochlor Technical

- In China, acetochlor is the second largest herbicide next only to glyphosate. But different to glyphosate, the majority of Chinese acetochlor technical is converted into formulations for domestic market.
- By July 2004, there are 17 active producers of acetochlor technical.
- The Chinese manufacturers producer a variety of acetochlor technical, from 80%, 88% to 90%, 92%, even 95%, 98%.
- The total capacity of acetochlor technical by July 2004 is XX t/a.
- The actual production in 2003 is XX tonnes.
- Among the Chinese production in 2003:
 XX tonnes is exported, the majority of which to India
 XX tonnes is captive consumed to make formulations
 XX tonnes is sold to other formulation producers

 Glance at Acetochlor Formulations

- By July 2004, there are 28 converters to purchase acetochlor technical to make formulations, 18 of them making the single preparation and 10 of them making compound preparation with acetochlor as ingredient.
- The following species of formulations are available in China: 50% EC, 90% EC, 20% WP, 40% emulsion.
- By July 2004, the total capacity of acetochlor formulation (single preparation & including those from producers of acetochlor technical) is XX tonnes (on base of 50% EC). The actual production in 2003 is XX tonnes in total including:
 XX tonnes for export, all to India
 XX tonnes for domestic market
