Description:

Aim

- To outline the Chinese 7-ADCA industry from aspects of production, import & export.
- To summarize & introduce the Chinese 7-ADCA manufacturers
- To introduce the research situation on the above intermediates in China
- To evaluate the competitiveness of Chinese 7-ADCA industry
- To summarize the cephalosporin industry in brief

Scope

This project mainly researches 7-ADCA along the value chain, including
• Cefalexin
• Cefradine
• Cefaclor
• Cefadroxil
Highlights

China has begun the research on 7-ADCA since the Sixth Five-Year period (1980-1984). But for a long time, there was not commercial production due to lagged production route and low yield. China started commercial production of 7-ADCA in 1999. In the past years, the production of 7-ADCA was weak, and there are only 3 active manufacturers of 7-ADCA as of October 2003.

Chinese producers are not very optimistic about their future competitive ability because the production cost is high, and quite a large number of 7-ADCA consumers prefer imported 7-ADCA, whose price is lower than domestic product.

Some oversea pharmaceutical manufacturers, such as Italy Antibiotics and Netherlands Chemferm, have already set up joint ventures in China to engage in the production of cefradine, cefaclor, etc. These joint ventures possess quite a large share of cephalosporin market (about 35%), and they would like to use the imported 7-ADCA. The total import quantity of 7-ADCA is about 700 tonnes in China in 2001, of which 400 tonnes were imported by these two joint ventures.

Chinese production technology of 7-ADCA was not mature, and the cost for water and electricity is large.

The domestic supply of 7-ADCA can't meet the demand, and quite a large quantity of 7-ADCA needs to be imported. 7-ADCA has the largest import volume among all cephalosporin intermediates bulk pharmaceuticals. The import quantity of 7-ADCA in Jan 2003 occupied 44.92% of total imported cephalosporin intermediates bulk pharmaceuticals.
