Story 1 One-Third of China Hurt by Acid Rain One-third of China 's vast landmass is suffering from acid rain caused by its rapid industrial growth. China 's factories spewed out 25.5 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide (SO 2 , the chemical that causes acid rain) last year, raising 27 percent from 2000. Pollution from factories and power plants was raising by 9 percent a year. The increased sulphur dioxide means that one-third of China 's territory was affected by acid rain, posing a major threat to soil and food safety. Environmental protection has become a prominent issue in China following a string of industrial accidents that poisoned major rivers, forcing several cities to shut down their water supply systems. Chinese cities are among the world's smoggiest following two decades of breakneck economic growth. All of China 's major rivers are now dangerously polluted. Millions of people are lack of drinking clean water. The government pledged this year to cut air pollution emissions by 10 percent by 2010. Beijing City plans to spend $175 billion on environmental protection over the next five years, up 60 percent from the previous five years. Story 2 Shandong Plans to Invest RMB360 Billion to Environment Protection According to environment protection program of Shandong Province during the 11 th five-year period, Shandong will invest RMB360 billion in environment protection. Of this investment, about RMB170 billion will be used in the construction of base installation of city's environment, about RMB33.1billion will be used in industrial pollution treatment, and about RMB95.9 billion will be used in the construction of ecological engineering. With the development of Chinese industry and economy, China will pay more attention to environment protection. Therefore, the investment in this field will become more in future. Story 3 Situation of Environment Pollution still Sever in China Although China has made great efforts to protect its environment, the country's environment pollution has not been improved at all. According to a survey of environmental protection efforts in 15 provinces around China , although China has invested over RMB800 billion in the environmental protection over the past five years, and its trend of environment pollution has been slowed down, it still has not completed two critical indexes in the field. China is expected to reduce 10 percent of the sulfur dioxide emissions during the past five years. However, the emissions in 2005 in fact increased 27 percent from 2000. Meanwhile, the country's emissions of chemical oxygen demand last year also increased 5 percent compared to the year of 2004, while it aimed to reduce 10 percent. There are three main reasons for the environment pollution. The first is the lack of investment due to the neglect of environment protection; the second is due to the inappropriate industrial structure that leads to the over-consumption of energy resources; and the last one is that the execution of environment laws is relaxed and lack of supervision. Moreover, situations in fields such as solid waste and atmosphere pollution were still severe. More than half of the nearly 700 cities and counties monitored suffered acid rain in 2005. That means one third of China's territory was affected. If you have any queries to specific data or information, please feel free to Contact Us.
