This report presents an overview of China's supply and demand of metolachlor which is a selective herbicide, as well as forecast on the future trends.
Metolachlor is featured by broad weeding spectrum, high effectiveness and wide applications. The metolachlor industry in China had a fast expansion since 2017, while it was relatively stable in 2015 and 2016. As of July 2019, there are still two new projects of metolachlor technical in China. Therefore, the output of metolachlor technical in China increased accordingly. Despite a growth in metolachlor production, it is noteworthy that the pressure from environmental protection was heavy in China during 2018. Some metolachlor producers had to suspend production from time to time. It is believed that environmental protection will continue to be the chief barrier for metolachlor supply in China in the near future.
In 2018, the annual ex-works price of 97% metolachlor technical increased by about 15.47% compared with that in 2016. In Feb. 2018, the ex-works price of metolachlor technical even rose to USD4,679.20/t. For one thing, stringent environmental inspection has pushed up the price. For another, increasing demand from overseas market has driven up the price at the same time. Yet later this year, as the new capacity of Anhui Zhongshan Chemical Co., Ltd. was put into production, the price of metolachlor technical began to decline.
It is worth mentioning that, with potentially more metolachlor technical on the market, the ex-works price of the product is expected to decrease in the next few years. Nevertheless, considering the heavy pressures from environmental protection in China, it seems unlikely for domestic manufacturers to produce too much metolachlor technical. Thus, the ex-works price of metolachlor will fluctuate at a high level in the near future.
