On October 13, 2021, Zaozhuang Hengren Industry and Trade Co., Ltd. in Shandong Province announced a corn price increase of RMB 20 per ton, with a latest offer of RMB 2,700 per ton, equivalent to RMB 2.7 per kilogram. The price was raised for the second time within the year, and the current quote is the highest price in the past week.

Furthermore, recently more than a dozen deep-processing companies in Shandong continued to increase the purchase price of corn. For example, Yishui Qingyuan located in Linyi City of Shandong Province, announced a price increase of RMB 40 per ton to purchase corn. Other deep processing companies that have increased their corn prices are Yishui Qingyuan and Luzhou Group, located in Linyi city of Shandong province, Chengwu Dadi Co., Ltd., located in Heze city of Shandong province, and Xilai Starch, located in Jining city of Shandong province, each raising its corn price by at least RMB 10 per ton in recent days. Current quotes for the price of a ton of corn in Shandong province range between RMB 2500 and RMB 2720.

Shandong agricultural authorities issue late corn harvest plan

In response to the increasing demand and increasing prices for corn, agricultural authorities in Shandong have encouraged the late harvest of corn crops, which will increase the total yield of corn. In particular, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Shandong Province has issued a "Notice on carrying out an effective and well-timed late harvest of corn," which gives directives into how farmers are to carry out a late corn harvest to maximize yields. Experts estimate that if farmers delay the corn harvest by seven to ten days, then the corn yield per hectare will increase by 600 to 1000 kilograms.

Corn is the most key part of grain production in Shandong Province, and stable and abundant corn production is of great in order to produce enough seed for the next year's harvest and ensure a plentiful harvest for the year. However, the corn planting period in Shandong was delayed by around 5 to 7 days this year during the summer planting period, due to a late wheat harvest and many other factors. If corn is harvested according to the normal schedule this year, then this will lead to a small harvest.

Shandong authorities focus on maintaining and repairing agricultural machinery for a speedy harvest

In response to the late planting of corn, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Shandong have issued a late harvest plan for corn in the province. The most key tool used in the harvest of corn is agricultural machinery. According to the agricultural authorities, all localities should strengthen the organization and scheduling of corn harvesting, and entire villages and towns should organize to appropriately timed corn harvesting through various forms such as holding agricultural machinery on-site meetings to ensure that fields are harvested at the appropriate time. Authorities have also stated that it is necessary to that agricultural machinery workers understand the corn harvest period scientifically and that authorities resolutely prevent agricultural machinery from being used to harvest crops prematurely. At the same time, machinery should be tested and repaired in advance to improve the working efficiency of the combine harvester and shorten the harvesting process.
