China's Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) Zhang Zhongqiu led a delegation to the 23rd Meeting of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Commission for Foot and Mouth Disease in South-East Asia and China (SEACFMD) held in Siem Reap, Cambodia on 8-10 March 2017 and addressed the opening ceremony.

The meeting reviewed SEACFMD activities, summarized the experience of FMD control in the Asia-Pacific region and made in-depth analyses of the current FMD control situation. Based on these, the Meeting made recommendations on FMD control for the next step in the region. Participants recognized the progress in the implementation of the SEACFMD campaign in recent years and the important role played in improving animal health in the region and ensuring the safety of world trade of animals and animal products.

On the sidelines of the Meeting, CVO Zhang Zhongqiu had a work meeting with OIE Director General Monique Eloit. The two sides exchanged views on furthering China-OIE cooperation in veterinary service. CVO Zhang Zhongqiu noted that, in recent years, the Chinese Government has effectively advanced transboundary animal diseases control through various means and assisted neighboring countries and regions within China's capacity. China is willing to actively fulfill its obligations as an OIE member, and continue improving bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms and regional and global animal health under the OIE framework.

Dr. Monique Eloit thanked the MOA for its long-standing support for OIE and spoke highly of China's participation in global and regional veterinary service and China's role in animal health. She expressed willingness to work with China to promote the healthy development of global public health within the One World One Health concept.

A total of more than 80 participants attended the Meeting, including representatives from 11 SEACFMD members, OIE headquarters, regional representations of the OIE and the FAO and OIE regional reference laboratories, and delegates from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea.
