3rd High Level Training and Experience Sharing on GIAHS held in China

The Third High Level Training and Experience Sharing on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), co-organized by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture of China, was held in China from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4, 2016. Over 30 officials and experts from 18 countries in Europe, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region and from FAO and the FAO GIAHS scientific advisory group participated in the training.

 

The training included lectures, country experience sharing and field trips. Experts from FAO GIAHS Secretariat and relevant fields gave lectures on the GIAHS background, concept and the application procedures of GIAHS and made presentations on its dynamic conservation and management, including the added value of GIAHS products, agri-tourism, ecological compensation, as well as the relationship between modern and traditional agriculture. Participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco, Japan and Italy shared the experiences on agricultural heritage dynamic conservation and management in their respective countries.

 

During the training, the participants visited the GIAHS sites in China, including the Dong's Rice Fish Duck System in Guizhou and the Xinghua Duotian Agrosystem in Jiangsu, and the GIAHS candidate Xiajin Yellow River Old Course Ancient Mulberry Grove System in Shandong. Referring to China's experience, they prepared draft GIAHS proposals and action plans for dynamic conservation of the potential agricultural heritage sites in their own countries.

 

Remarkable progress has been made since the first training course was launched three year ago, which has not only given publicity to China's traditional farming civilization and culture, but also promoted the development of GIAHS in the participating countries. Statistics show that more than 70 participants from over 40 countries have received systematic training from the training courses.
