Australia grain production seen to rise 2% despite adverse weather

Despite unfavourable weather conditions, Australia's total winter crop production in 2015-16 is forecast to rise by 2% to 39.1 million tonnes from the last season (2014-15), the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) said in its latest forecast.

"Despite difficult seasonal conditions, we expect a small increase in production compared with last season", ABARES Executive Director Karen Schneider said.

Ms. Schneider said that the increase in grain production was expected despite "below average rainfall in many cropping regions during early spring and above average daytime temperatures in southern Australia".

Wheat production is forecast to rise by 1% to 24 million tonnes and barley by 2% to 8.2 million tonnes, while canola production is forecast to fall by 14% to around 3 million tonnes, she added.

"Among the other winter crops, a rise in area planted to pulses is expected to result in increased production despite a decline in yield prospects over recent months" Schneider said.

This year's expected wheat production is below Australia's five year average of 26 million tonnes but above the 10- and 20-year averages of around 22 million tonnes.
