Bayer CropScience insecticideMoventoEnergy is a game-changer for MacKay’s Farming in north QueenslandBayer CropScience insecticideMoventoEnergy is a game-changer for MacKay’s Farming in north Queensland" title="Share this link on Facebook">AustraliaJuly 15, 2015As director of Tully-based MacKay’s Farming in north Queensland, Stephen MacKay has seen plenty in his farming career. However, having put the new Bayer CropScience insecticide Movento® Energy through its paces in trials on the family banana properties over the last couple of years, he is convinced the product will bring previously unseen benefits to their operation.“Bayer came to us very early in the piece with the news they were bringing a new product to market, and we’ve jumped on board with Movento Energy.“We started a fair while ago so we could trial the product throughout the year, meaning we know it’s going to work through all the different seasons,” he explains.Movento Energy is an insecticide with two active ingredients, imidacloprid and spirotetramat and is registered for the control of banana weevil borer and rust thrips in bananas. The product replaces the well-known Confidor® Guard.By establishing plots on the MacKay properties of current practice against the new practice with Movento Energy, plus a control plot with nil treatment, they were able to analyse performance over time. For Mr MacKay, it was critical the product was tested rigorously from a farmer’s viewpoint, complementing the work done by Bayer staff.“The guys working for Bayer were doing the scientific side of things, but being farmers we were looking from the farming perspective, so apart from rigorously testing it against all seasons and a range of pests and diseases, we were also looking for any productivity benefits. We just believe with a healthy plant you’ll have better production and that’s what it looks like this product is definitely delivering,” Mr MacKay saysImportantly, the trial work also showed the MacKay’s that Movento Energy allows for much greater flexibility in application timing.“Under previous technology we were having mite flare-ups, especially any time it was dry or exceptionally hot, so we’d avoid certain times of the year, meaning we weren’t applying the product optimally to the right growth stage of a plant.“With this product not inducing mite flare-ups, we can apply it any time throughout the year that suits the crop stage and cycle, and it also seems to protect the plant from any pest stresses, so it’s definitely what we’ve been looking for.“The spin off benefits from a healthy plant are that it can definitely withstand lots of other things that may attack it like funguses, so we can then move forward with less applications in other areas,” Mr MacKay explains. With a site-specific injection method of application, Mr MacKay believes Movento Energy fits well into the company’s current work practices.“It really suits our model of being well protected, away from human contact and obviously it works very effectively in that environment because I’m sure we get the full benefit of the product with no degradation from soil or sun. While the application process is time-consuming, we find that like anything in our business, doing something properly once is the best way to do it.With good application technique and only visiting that one tree once in its’ whole lifecycle for that sort of pest and disease protection isn’t that onerous in the overall cost of the business, because also you’re putting yourself in a position where you’ve eliminated the risk of pests and diseases putting that plant under any stress,” Mr MacKay concluded. So, having satisfied themselves with a rigorous trial process, the MacKays are looking forward to putting Movento Energy over every banana plant on their farms this season, confident in the significant benefits the investment will bring.Movento® and Confidor® are Registered Trademarks of the Bayer Group.More news from: Bayer CropScience AustraliaWebsite: http://www.cnchemicals.com/: July 17, 2015The news item on this page is copyright by the organization where it originatedFair use notice
