South Africa, the biggest corn producing country in Africa, could be a net importer for the first time in seven years this season as drought persists, Bloomberg reports.

The country may import 766,000 tonnes of corn in the year to the end of April, comprising 716,000 tonnes of the yellow variety used locally for animal feed, Grain SA told Bloomberg.

South Africa imported for the first time in 11 months in March as the worst drought since 1992 hit the main growing provinces of the Free State and North West, which together made up 64% of the country's crop in 2014. Grain SA had provided a report in March: http://www.cnchemicals.com/

"There are large supplies of yellow maize in the world market, but South Africa can only import from certain countries, such as the South American and Black Sea countries due to genetically modified organism registrations," Grain SA said.
