Experts appraise project of Ensuring Safe Application of Pesticides in Vegetable Production

Beijing—ICAMA held a Working Conference on Special Campaign for the Application of Pesticides in Vegetable Production on June 15th, 2012. Relevant experts analyzed and appraised the project of Ensuring Safe Application of Pesticides in Vegetable Production. Director-General Sui Pengfei attended and addressed the meeting.

The project aims at dealing with issues of pesticides application, including no provisions concerning legitimate application of pesticides for over 200 diseases and pests affecting 80% vegetables, chaos in pesticides application, excessive pesticides residue presence as well as pesticides quality and application incidents.

Sui pointed out that safe application of pesticides in vegetables production is a heating topic of society; and we should make it a priority of doing practical work for farmers to properly address the availability of registered pesticides for vegetable diseases and pests.

Pesticides registration for vegetable production is a complicated and systematic issue involving broader sectors. It requires specialized regulations and policies, drawing upon better practices from developed countries or international organizations while respecting China's practical situation and experiences from special campaign related with pesticides application to push forward management of pesticides registration.

At the Meeting, Research Fellow Zhang Wenjun reported the implementation scheme of the project on behalf of the organizer. Upon query and full discussion about the implementation scheme, the Panel reached the consensus that the project is goal-oriented, feasible, informative and science-based. The achieving of anticipated goals will significantly improve the safe application of pesticides in vegetable production.

The Meeting was chaired by Deputy Director-General Gu Baogen. Nearly 30 experts and representatives attended the Meeting, including those from National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center, the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (IVF-CAAS), China Agricultural University (CAU), other colleges and ICAMA.
