4th International Symposium on Pesticide and Environmental Safety held in Beijing

Pesticide production and application as well as its environmental concerns is an important issue faced by all countries, which has significant impact on the sustainable development of the human society. In recent years, China, along with many countries, has made rapid progress in the development of pesticide regulations and laws, quality and safety control of agri-products, environmental risk assessment, and pesticide application technology development. Scientists, legislators, and business leaders from these countries eagerly hope to strengthen communication and cooperation with the international community to further improve research and regulation capacity. To this end, the 4th International Symposium on Pesticide and Environmental Safety and the 5th Pan Pacific Pesticide Science Conference or the 8th International Workshop on Crop Protection Chemistry and Regulatory Harmonization was held in Beijing during September15th to 20th. The Symposium and the Conference were jointly organized by Beijing Pesticide Society (BPS), International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Pesticide Science Society of Japan (PSSJ), Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), and China Agriculture University (CAU).

The Symposium was attended by over 600 participants including pesticide scientists, businessman and government representatives from over 30 countries (China, the United States, EU, Brazil, Australia, Japan, South Korea, etc.)  During the 3-day symposium, 306 papers were submitted, 54 sessions with 8 thematic reports and 177 special reports were conducted, and 150 posters were displayed.  Discussions at the Symposium covered a wide range of areas including pesticide regulation, pesticide residue in food and its related standards in international trade, assessment of pesticide environmental risk, pesticide application technology, new pesticides development, and pesticide function mechanism, metabolism and resistance.

During the Symposium, apart from extensive academic discussions on global pesticide research and new technology and ideas in pesticide regulation, consensus was also reached on global harmonization of pesticide regulations and laws and rules of international agricultural trade, which will certainly contribute to future development of pesticide science and improvement of agricultural products safety and environmental safety.
