Mod.DHA, edited] <http://www.diariovoces.com.pe/30642/gremio-arrocero-advierte-plaga-sembrios-arroz#ixzz3QWB3ty9I>Rice growers in San Martin region fear the introduction of a rice disease from Tumbes where it has already destroyed over 50 per cent of rice
crops
. There are no appropriate controls to prevent the spread of this disease.Growers are calling on the respective government agencies to implement phytosanitary strategies, so as to avoid problems like the rampant spread previously encountered with a new strain of coffee rust in the country (ProMED-mail post 20141027.2904184). They are asking to set up a regional seed production facility in San Martin, since at the moment seed for the whole country is produced only in Cajamarca region.[byline: Alfonso Delgado G]--communicated by:ProMED-mail<promed@promedmail.org>[Tumbes region is adjacent to Ecuador where a fungal disease complex is currently affecting rice crops (ProMED-mail post 20141212.3028606).The disease referred to above may be due to the same or a similar pathogen complex to that in Ecuador. However, a range of pathogens, including fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes, have been reported previously to affect rice crops in the region. Reliable diagnosis of the cause and/or pathogen(s) associated with the problems is essential before any management strategies can be designed.MapsPeru:<http://www.peruline.com/peru/perukarte.htm> and <http://healthmap.org/promed/p/16128>Peru Regions:<http://digilander.libero.it/monast/inglese/images/peru.gif>PicturesSymptoms of some rice diseases via:<http://www.ipmimages.org/browse/Areasubs.cfm?area=125&div=2>LinksInformation on some diseases of rice via:<http://www.knowledgebank.irri.org/training/fact-sheets/pest-management/diseases>List of major diseases and pathogens of rice:<https://www.apsnet.org/publications/commonnames/Pages/Rice.aspx> - Mod.DHA][See Also:2014---Fungal disease complex, rice - Ecuador 20141212.30286062013---Black smut, rice - Colombia: 1st report 20131211.21103922012----Undiagnosed disease, rice - Ecuador: (EO) 20120509.11270652011---Panicle blight, rice - Colombia: update 20110701.19942010---Panicle blight, rice - Dominican Republic 20100204.03752009---Rice diseases - USA (03): quarantine 20090427.1591 Panicle blight, rice - Colombia (TO, HU) 20090921.33152008---Blast disease, rice -
