Argentina''s 2012-13 grain crops reach record 105 million tonnes

Underlining the excellent performance of the corn harvest and yields, Argentina''s 2012-13 grain and oilseed crop reached a record 105 million tonnes, as announced by President Cristina Fernandez.

During an official ceremony President Fernandez said that the data, some of which had been anticipated, had been provided to her by the Minister of Agriculture Norberto Yauhar.

However the record crop occurred in the midst of Argentina''s worst wheat harvest in 111 years with only nine million tonnes that has seen the price of bread soar and the government implement a bill that allows it to confiscate the grain to ensure a normal supply and fine and jail the alleged hoarders.

The soy crop which has become the main provider of foreign currency for cash strapped Argentina had reached 48.1 million tonnes in mid-June which is almost the original estimate of 48.5 million tonnes.

The average yield reached 2.560 kilogrammes per hectare and according to Agriculture ministry data there was still 200.000 hectares to be harvested.

But the star crop this last season has been corn which so far has reached 21.4 million tonnes. The USDA has estimated Argentina''s total crop at 26 million tonnes and the Weekly Farm Outlook from the Buenos Aires stock exchange is keeping to its estimate of 24.8 million tonnes. If this estimate is finally confirmed it would mean that the previous season''s 21.5 million tonnes has been surpassed.
