Japan's beef imports jump

Japan's beef imports rose 14% in August to 50,418 tonnes from the same period last year on strong demand, data from Japan's Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corp. showed.

During the first eight months of the year, imported beef consumption in Japan also increased by 4%, to 341,471 tonnes year-on-year. Imported beef constituted 61% of total beef consumption, which was 2% higher than last year's 59%.

According to the Japan Chain Stores Association, livestock product sales in supermarkets and other stores during the month were also up 13% year-on-year, despite higher prices.

Sales in yakiniku (Japanese- and Korean-style barbecue) also expanded 12% in August. Japanese-style fast foods (including gyudon rice bowl), western-style family restaurants (steaks and hamburgers) and dinner restaurants likewise registered growths, according to Japan Foodservice Association.

However, overall food-service sales decreased by 2%. The decline was attributed to typhoons and bad weather, during which consumers prefer to stay home.
