Hungary expects corn crop to reach 6.8 million tonnes

After dry weather cut yields, Hungary harvested just 4.74 million tonnes of corn last year but the country expects its 2013 corn crop to reach 6.8 million tonnes with the harvest nearly completed.

Agriculture Ministry State Secretary Gyorgy Czervan said that the 6.8 million tonnes corn crop expectation is slightly higher than 6.7 million tonne's initial estimate issued last month.

"The harvest is 99% complete, there are one or two smaller patches that may still be out there to finish," Czervan told a news conference. "It came in at 6.8 million tonnes, with an average yield of 5.6 tonnes per hectare," he said.

Hungary, one of Europe's top corn producers, harvested just 4.74 million tonnes of cornlast year after dry weather cut yields.

Czervan said Hungary would have a combined five million tonnes from the 2013 wheat and corn crop available for export, which could help the central European country maintain a hefty trade surplus.
