EU expects larger corn crop due to good weather

EU is expecting a larger corn crop this summer due to good weather, which would reduce EU's dependence on imports of the key feed ingredient from thecrisis-torn supplier - Ukraine.

Rain and sunshine in much of Europe in May has enabled farmers to complete their planned cornsowing and plants are developing well, analysts said.

Big exporter Hungary is forecast by FO Licht to harvest 7.6 million tonnes, against 6.7 million tonnes last year. Romania is expected to reap 9.5 million tonnes, close to its exceptionally large crop of 10.6 million tonnes last year. Poland may harvest 3.5 million tonne, only slightly lower than the very large harvest of 4 million tonnes last year when bad weather disrupted swings of other spring grains.
