Seed producer Barenbrug sets up new subsidiary in Brazil

Leading seed producer Royal Barenbrug Group has established a strategic relationship with DowAgroServices and set up a new subsidiary, Barenbrug do Brasil, in Brazil.

Based in Guiara the subsidiary will specialise in plant breeding, seed production and processing of pasture seeds, including Brachiaria hybrids and forage legumes for the Brazilian market.

With the most advanced seed processing and coating line in Latin America, Barenbrug do Brasil''s grass breeding facilities will concentrate on producing a top-quality portfolio of tropical and temperate grasses.

"This high-tech plant will give a new dimension to the forage grass seed business in Brazil with its focus on high-quality seed and genetics, creating added value for Brazilian farmers," said Frank Barenbrug, member of the board of directors of Royal Barenbrug Group.

Dow AgroSciences Global Business Leader Bill Root explained why they had chosen to collaborate with Barenbrug: "It is a great opportunity for us to leverage our production of Brachiaria hybrids seed with Barenbrug''s high-precision technology and expertise."

Barenbrug UK''s managing director, Paul Johnson added, "What is happening in other parts of the globe can have a direct and very positive effect on UK livestock farmers.

"For example at the end of last year we launched Proto Plus, a unique mix of Italian ryegrass and annual clovers. The three varieties in the mix had been developed by Barenbrug in France and Australia and it has performed very, very well in the UK."

Barenbrug do Brasil is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Royal Barenbrug Group, the family-owned industry leader whose core activities include plant breeding, grass seed production and international marketing of seeds for turf and forage grasses and legumes.
