Li Jiayang, Vice Minister of MOA and President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) met with the delegation of Michigan State University (MSU) in Beijing on October 15, 2014. The MSU delegation was headed by David DeWitt, Senior Associate Dean, College of Natural Science. The two sides exchanged views on pushing forward bilateral collaboration in biotechnology under a regular cooperation mechanism.

At the meeting, Vice Minister Li extended congratulations to the successful convening of the CAAS-MSU Workshop on Agricultural Biotechnology, and highlighted the significance of the Workshop in stepping up bilateral cooperation.

In order to strengthen the partnership in the future, Vice Minister Li put forward a four-point proposal: First, to establish a long-term exchanging mechanism and hold workshops in both countries on a regular and rotary basis; second, to apply for and carry out joint projects and enhance personnel exchange, mutual visits and cooperative training for doctoral students; third, to set up joint laboratories as a stable and regular cooperation platform; and fourth, to broaden cooperation fields and boost communication and collaboration in animal science, veterinary, agro-product processing, water resource utilization, agro-ecology, and so on.

David DeWitt agreed with Li on the above proposal, and spoke highly of CAAS' achievements in agricultural biotechnology. He invited the Chinese side to visit MSU next year to promote bilateral ties to a new height.

In order to get a better understanding of CAAS' ongoing researches on biotechnology, during their stay in Beijing the MSU delegation members paid field visits to the Institute of Crop Science, Institute of Plant Protection, Institute of Vegetables and Flowers, and Biotechnology Research Institute of CAAS.

The CAAS-MSU Workshop on Agricultural Biotechnology was held in Beijing on October 14th, 2014. 70 scientists and PhD students from MSU and CAAS attended the event.
