Japanese steel industry’s scrap purchase volumes fall in last December

According to data released by the Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japanese steel industry purchased around 1.867 million tons of scraps in last December, falling by 14.8% year on year.

Among them, 1.754 million tons were carbon steel scraps, decreasing by 5.4%; 70,000 tons were alloy steel scraps, down by 4.5% and 42,000 tons were pig iron scraps, falling by 3.6%, all compared to those in the same period of a year ago.

In last December, the Japanese steel industry consumed around 2.677 million tons of scraps, decreasing by 5.8% year on year.

As of the end of December, the stocks of carbon steel scraps held by the Japanese steelmakers totaled 2.629 million tons, decreasing by 11.3; those of alloy steel scraps were at 392,000 tons, falling by 8.6% and those of pig iron scraps were at 258,000 tons, rising by 1.2%, all compared to those in the same period of a year ago.
