As released by National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), China recorded a 19.3% year-on-year increase in the output of chemical pesticides to about 2.87 million tonnes from Jan. to Oct. 2012. It's worth noting that China's output of fungicides, the third largest pesticide category, witnessed a slip of 9.4% year on year to around 116,900 tonnes in the meantime, according to CCM's December Issue of Fungicides China News.

Moreover, the output of herbicides, the largest pesticide category, surged to 1.32 million tonnes in the first ten months of this year, up 42.5% over the same period of last year. In addition, insecticides still ranked the second place in output, reaching around 660,100 tonnes in China, though its YOY growth rate saw a decrease of 7.9% year on year.

By fungicide output, the top five regions included Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (Ningxia) and Shaanxi respectively. In detail, though Jiangsu Province's fungicide output slid by 18.6% year on year from Jan. to Oct. 2012 to about 47,900 tonnes, it still ranked the first place all over the country, accounting for 41.0% of the total output of fungicides. Meanwhile, Anhui Province confronted a slight decrease of 3.7% year on year to around 11,000 tonnes, taking the third position among all regions of China.

It is particularly worth noting that Zhejiang, Ningxia and Shaanxi all witnessed a significant rise in fungicide output in the first ten months of 2012. Specifically, Zhejiang climbed to the second place from the fourth one with a fungicide output of 16,300 tonnes, accounting for 13.9% of the total, up 17.5% year on year. Ningxia's YOY growth rate of fungicide output far exceeded that of other regions, reaching as much as 60.7%, which pushed up its fungicide output to around 10,000 tonnes from Jan. to Oct. this year. Shaanxi's output of fungicides saw a rise of 49.1% year on year to about 7,300 tonnes, ranking the fifth place.

In a way, fungicides' output slip can reflect that the market performance of fungicide industry isn't optimistic in 2012. Since early this year, several key conventional fungicide varieties suffered a downturn in export, such as carbendazim, mancozeb and thiophanate-methyl. As we all known, these conventional fungicides' output is much larger than that of other varieties, thus their export shrinkage has dragged down the integral performance of the industry.

Statistics from the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (China Customs) show that China's export volume of fungicides reduced by about 7.9% year on year from Jan. to Oct. 2012 to about 59,394 tonnes. Considering that China has been in the uptrend in fungicide export volume in the past few years, the recession in export business negatively impacted the production and sales of domestic fungicide industry to a certain extent.

Apart from the stagnant export situation, industrial integration, which is in line with the requirement of Pesticide Industry Policy issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT) in Aug. 2010, has gradually come into play–some small agrochemical companies have to suspend production or even be eliminated eventually. As a result, this also made China's output of fungicides go down more or less.

With the coming of pesticides' off-season, demand for fungicides from domestic market has entered a downturn period. What's more, the slumping export for fungicides may last for a period. Therefore, China's total output of fungicides in the whole year of 2012 is anticipated to fall off to some extent in comparison with that in 2011.
