On Aug. 25th, Wengfu Zijin Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Wengfu Zijin) launched the opening ceremony for its 50t/a iodine recovery project. With the investment of USD2.7 million, the project targeted at recovering iodine from dilute phosphoric acid in the production of diammonium phosphate. The project is expected to be put into operation before the end of 2012.

According to the research from Wengfu Group, Wengfu phosphorus mine (reserves: 580 million tonnes) contained around 0.007% iodine. Iodine from phosphorus resources could be seen as another effective way to extract iodine. As is known to all, China is relatively dependent on iodine imports for its lack of iodine resources. Around 64% was from import in 2010, whilst domestic consumption volume of iodine was estimated to be around 4,000 tonnes.

In addition to iodine recovery, China's certain enterprises are also energetic to develop fluorine-from-phosphorus recovery technology. By now, some China's leading phosphorus enterprises have gradually commercialized the technology, such as Wengfu Group, Kailin Group and Yuntianhua Group (the details see page 2 issue 1 Vol. 1: Phosphorus-fluorine integrated industry emerging in China).

Generally speaking, although only a small number of companies were capable of commercializing phosphorus accompanying resources in China, the recovery of such resources would become a widespread trend in the future phosphorus chemical area.

According to the Guiding Catalogue of Industrial Structure Adjustment (2011 version), it highlighted the recovery technology related to phosphorus accompanying resources. Moreover, the Guiding Catalogue of Industrial migration (2012 version), released by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on July 26th, 2012 (the details see this issue: Phosphate fertilizer production to quit East China), indicated that Sichuan and Guizhou provinces should focus on developing fluorine and iodine by phosphorus recovery technology.

Not only Chinese enterprises, but also the overseas enterprises were developing the recovery technology of phosphorus accompanying resources. On Sept. 24th, Uranium Equities' (UEQ's) PhosEnergy demonstration plant succeeded in recovering uranium from phosphate streams in the production of phosphate-based fertilizers. In the meantime, UEQ described this pilot production as an incredible result.
