On 23 May, the GTCC published the auction result of corn stored temporarily by China, reaching a gross close rate of 90.66%. The minimum price for this auction was USD29.70/t (RMB200/t) more than that of 2018, far beyond the figure expected by the market. This has raised costs of corn significantly, further pushing up national corn price. However, the future corn market is forecast to be bearish.

Fall armyworm has spread in several corn producing areas in southern provinces/regions as of May since its debut in Jan. 2019 in Yunnan Province. To deal with this armyworm, the MOA has taken prompt actions.

In late April, Shandong Longlive Bio-Technology reported operating revenue of USD127.11 million (RMB856 million), down by 56.47% YoY, and net profit of -USD416.52 million (-RMB2.81 billion) in its annual report for 2018. Notably, Shandong Longlive Bio-Technology was requested by the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on 10 May to suspend its stocks from listing on 15 May.

On 30 April, COFCO Bio-chemical reported its annual report for 2018: operating revenue of USD2.63 billion (RMB17.70 billion), up by 11.40% YoY; and net profits of USD71.72 million (RMB483 million), down by 48.02% YoY. COFCO Bio-chemical gained higher market shares from the fuel ethanol sector after asset restructuring in 2018.

On 14 May, the GTCC announced on its homepage that the 2019 auction of corn temporarily stored by the state will be launched on 23 May. There will be 4 million tonnes of corn putting up for the first auction, which were produced in the northeast in 2014.

Sino-US trade dispute has escalated in May. On 10 May, the US increased tariffs of 10% on USD200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25%. Then on 13 May, China announced its decision to impose tariffs as high as 10%, 20%, and 25% respectively on part of USD60 billion of US goods from 1 June, 2019 onwards.

On 29 April, the Ecology and Environment Department of Jilin Province announced on its homepage that the environmental impact assessment report of the 10,000 t/a waxy corn modified starch & reclaimed water reuse project (8,000 t/a of HDP and 2,000 t/a of acetylated distarch adipate) undertaken by COFCO Bio-chemical Gongzhuling was approved.

Report said that SDIC Bio-energy Hailun resumed the building of its 300,000 t/a fuel ethanol project on 18 March after temporary suspension in the Spring Festival. The project is expected to have trial run in Nov. and be operated officially on 15 Dec., 2019.

On 25 April, Xinjiang Heyuan Zhengda commenced its fine chemical circular economic industrial park phase-I project. The project will be built in 3 phases, of which the phase-I programme will produce vitamins, dry starch, corn steep liquor, corn oil, sorbitol, and alanine from corn via fermentation section involved.

Changshouhua and Xiwang Foodstuffs issued their annual report for 2018 respectively in late April, with good news that both of their revenue grew mildly over 2017. Among them, the former achieved revenue of USD509.06 million (RMB3.43 billion) and the latter realised USD867.94 million (RMB5.85 billion).
