Some countries have restricted food export, and the global food supply chain is clogged, which causes concern about food supply in China. Experts considered that the quantities of staple grains such as rice and wheat are sufficient in China; however, an obstacle is estimated to lie on the supply of soybean in China this year.

India has launched a lockdown for 21 days to contain the epidemic of COVID-19 since the end of March, during which the outputs of pesticide in companies within the country are restricted, and the major producers of pendimethalin have been suspended, driving up the price of pendimethalin TC in China.

Affected by locust plague in foreign countries, overseas demands for organophosphorus insecticide TC were huge in April, pushing up the price in China. India's supplies of pyrethroid insecticides and related products were restricted by the COVID-19 epidemic, thus the prices in China were raised. Price of nicotinamide insecticide in China declined due to high domestic inventory and slack demands at home and abroad.

The policy of lockdown has been carried out in India since 25 Mach, in order to contain the spreading of COVID-19. India is the fourth biggest agrochemical producer of the world, thus the continued lockdown will cause impact on the supply chains of related pesticides. In recent years, India's capacity of 2,4-D has been growing. The long-term implementation of lockdown will tighten the supply of the product and at an end push up the price, but will benefits China's producers of 2,4-D.

India has launched a lockdown nationwide for 21 days for containing COVID-19. India is a producer of alpha-cypermethrin, acephate, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, dimethoate, ethion, fenvalerate, endosulfan, pendimethalin, profenofos, mancozeb, isoproturon, glyphosate, monocrotophos, deltamethrin, 2,4-D, phorate, imidacloprid, triazophos and indoxacarb. Among them, the capacities of pyrethroid pesticides and mancozeb in India occupy a relatively high proportion of the global one. Moreover, India is one of the most important exporters of P-fluoro-m-phenoxybenzaldehyde, key intermediate of cyhalothrin. The lockdown may bring about influence to part of the producers that are not full-equipped with integrated production. China's prices of multiple pesticides may be driven up by the lockdown.

CCM summarises domestic interim policies and measures related to phosphorus chemical industry during COVID-19.

The National Bureau of Statistics of China released the data of domestic phosphate fertiliser output in Jan.–Feb. 2020, showing that output dropped significantly YoY. CCM estimates that global output of phosphate fertilisers will also descend as similar situations also occurred in other countries.

China witnessed zero import and export of vegetable seed in March, 2020, mainly due to the impact of the glocal pandemic of COVID-19. Many countries have carried out the lockdown or closure policy to contain the diease, and 13 countries have issued grain export bans.

In late March, China Customs released the import and export data of fertilisers in Jan.–Feb. 2020, showing declined imports and exports of fertilisers. CCM summarises import and export situations of phosphate fertilisers and compound fertilisers and makes a prediction.

In Jan.–Feb., China imported 932,246.51 tonnes of corn (up 64.75% YoY) at a price of USD213.30/t (down 1.97% YoY), while it exported 1,184 tonnes in total (up 186.57%). Although some countries have limited their food exports due to COVID–19, China's corn market will not be impacted significantly in the short term.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Chinese companies delayed the resumption of work. In Feb., azoxystrobin TC producers ran a low operating rate, leading to a tight supply of azoxystrobin TC. Besides, depressed supply of raw materials, restricted logistics, labor shortage and rising costs impeded China's exports of azoxystrobin.

Affected by the outbreak of COVID-19, the export volume of Chinese mancozeb fell significantly in Feb., 2020 MoM, while the export price of Chinese mancozeb in the same month increased MoM.

Feb., 2020 saw a plunge in China's export volume of agrochemical products as the outbreak of COVID-19 depressed the export. In Feb., the export volume of chlorothalonil dropped significantly MoM, while the price of chlorothalonil fluctuated slightly MoM as the impact of the virus on the price has yet to fully shown up.

China's pesticide export was affected by logistics as well as import and export policies in other countries under the outbreak of COVID-19. Therefore a significant MoM decrease was seen in China's export of chlorpyrifos in Feb., 2020.

Affected by the epidemic of COVID-19, a sharp MoM decrease was seen in China's export of indoxacarb in Feb., 2020. Major indoxacarb products exported by China are TC product which experienced a smaller MoM decrease compared with that of indoxacarb formulation product.

Foreign trades in China in Feb., 2020 were affected by COVID-19 epidemic. Therefore China witnessed a sharp MoM decline in export of imidacloprid in Feb., 2020, when compared with the same period of Jan. However there was an increase in the export price of imidacloprid, especially that of imidacloprid formulation.

China's pesticide export had been influenced by the COVID-19 epidemic to certain extent in Feb., 2020. A significant drop was seen in the export volume of atrazine in Feb., 2020, but the export price of atrazine remained stable, compared with that in Jan.

China's export of acetochlor TC and formulation products in Feb., 2020 both showed significant YoY decreases, especially that of acetochlor formulation. As for price, dual YoY declines were seen in the export prices of acetochlor TC and formulation products.

By 24 April, there have been over 2.6 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the globe. Although the disease in China has been under control after months of efforts, it is still uncertain when the inflection point will come from the prospective of global pandemic situation. Shortage of labor force and suspension of production resulting from COVID-19 outbreak hit the global export trade. China's pesticide export is also influenced but the pandemic is beneficial to China's pesticide industry to certain extent.

The epidemic of COVID-19 has brought about certain impact to export of paraquat which is an export-oriented pesticide. As for production, some paraquat producers are located in Hubei province where was affected most, therefore output of parauat decreased. As for export, export volume of paraquat declined sharply in Feb., 2020, due to the implementations of traffic control and epidemic control measures.
