On 22 May, 2017, the Third National Crop Variety Certification Committee announced that 176 corn seed species passed the preliminary test in 2017, the highest ever number in China's record. With provincial figures included, the number reached about 2,000. Compared with 34 corn seeds that were certificated in the Eighth Meeting of National Crop Variety Certification Committee on 28 March, 2016, this year's figure is 4.17 times larger.

In Shandong Province, 50 new species of 4 crops passed the variety certifications, such as 38 corn seeds species, 4 cotton seeds, 4 rice seeds and 4 soybean seeds. These crops are among the five major crops (wheat included) defined by Seed Law of People's Republic of China (2015 Revision) and the number of varieties, especially that of corn seeds, reached the highest ever record since the establishment of the Agricultural Crop Variety Approval Commission of Shandong Province in 1982.

On 15 May, 2017, Jiangsu Ruihua sold the production rights of its three quality wheat varieties, "Ruihuamai 518", "Huamai 218", and "Huaimai 36", at a total value of USD2.42 million (RMB16.50 million). Particularly, "Ruihuamai 518" was transferred to Anhui Yongmin at USD1.76 million (RMB12.00 million), a new high in domestic wheat variety transfer deals.

In 2016, the total sales of Gansu Huarui reached USD17.83 million (RMB121.44 million). Its seed sales achieved USD7.75 million (RMB52.74 million), accounted for 43.43% of the total sales.

In 2016, Shennong Gene generated full-year seed sales of USD47.37 million (RMB322.53 million). Particularly, hybrid rice seeds made the largest contribution, with sales of USD36.45 million (RMB248.16 million), 21.40% of the company's total sales.

In 2016, the seed sales of Jiangsu Hongqi reached USD33.57 million. The sales of hybrid rice seeds, conventional rice seeds, wheat seeds and corn seeds hit USD13.39 million (RMB91.19 million), USD9.89 million (RMB67.35 million), USD9.96 million (RMB67.81 million) and USD0.32 million (RMB2.20 million), accounted for 38.75%, 28.62%, 28.82% and 0.93% of the total sales respectively.

In 2016, the total sales of Jiangsu Mingtian hit USD47.43 million (RMB332.96 million) and seed sales reached USD46.81 million. Its sales of wheat, rice, corn and other crop seeds achieved USD35.61 million (RMB242.45 million), USD8.69 million (RMB59.20 million), USD2.32 million (RMB15.79 million) and USD0.19 million (RMB1.28 million), accounted for 75.07%, 18.33%, 4.89% and 0.40% of the total sales respectively.

In 2016, the seed sales of Henan Dehong achieved USD0.81 million, 64.96% of the total sales. The sales of wheat seeds, soybean seeds and corn seeds hit USD0.63 million (RMB4.32 million), USD0.14 million (RMB0.98 million) and USD0.04 million (RMB0.25 million), accounted for 50.54%, 11.49% and 2.93% of the total sales.

In 2016, the seed sales of Sichuan Jin'ante hit USD4.33 million, 98.41% of the total sales. The sales of rice seeds and corn seeds reached USD2.13 million (RMB14.49 million) and USD2.05 million (RMB13.98 million), occupied 46.61% and 48.32% of the total sales respectively.

In 2016, the total sales of Sichuan Xike hit USD21.18 million (RMB144.19 million), up by 50.86% YoY, and its seed sales reached USD20.78 million (RMB141.58 million), occupied 98.19% of the total sales.

In 2016, the seed sales of Hefei Fengle achieved USD45.35 million, down by 26.07% YoY and occupied 25.36% of the total sales. The decrease was mainly due to the falling corn seed sales, which dropped by USD11.92 million (RMB81.16 million) to USD10.42 million (RMB70.96 million) from USD22.34 million (RMB152.12 million).

On 5 May, 2017, the HAAS transferred the exclusive production right of its new wheat variety Emai 006 to Hubei Seed Group at a price of USD0.22 million (RMB1.50 million).

In 2016, the seed sales of Anhui Winall achieved USD97.40 million (RMB663.17 million), 87.58% of the total sales. The sales of seeds of rice, wheat, corn, vegetable, cotton, rapeseed were USD62.27 million (RMB424.01 million), USD16.28 million (RMB110.86 million), USD15.08 million (RMB102.68 million), USD3.43 million (RMB23.34 million), USD0.17 million (RMB1.15 million) and USD0.16 million (RMB1.09 million), accounted for 56%, 14.64%, 13.56%, 3.08%, 0.15% and 0.14% respectively.

China's National Biosafety Committee was to hold a meeting by the end of May 2017, to conduct science-based safety assessments of all 8 pending US biotech product applications for their intended use, as revealed in the US-China Economic Cooperation 100-Day Action Plan. The 8 products may all be GM crops, including 2 soybean varieties, 4 corn varieties, and 2 alfalfa varieties. The final evaluation results have yet to come out.

In 2016, the seed sales of Jiangsu Zhongjiang reached USD54.71 million and the sales of crop seeds hit USD38.88 million (RMB264.75 million), accounted for 70.79% of the total sales. The main products of the company were rice, corn and wheat seeds. The sales of vegetable seeds and oil-bearing crop seeds achieved USD1.61 million (RMB10.94 million) and USD0.18 million (RMB1.25 million), occupied 2.93% and 0.34% of the total sales respectively.

In 2016, the seed sales of Beijing Dabeinong hit USD97.60 million (RMB664.58 million), down by 1.64% YoY and accounted for 3.95% of its total sales. Its sales of rice seeds increased by 24.70% YoY to USD77.29 million (RMB526.37 million), while its corn seed sales declined by 54.10% YoY to USD13.25 million (RMB90.19 million). The decrease of corn seed sales was due to the overall large inventory of the corn seed industry, sluggish downstream demand and the establishment of crop production service centres.

Statistics show that the market of hybrid late rice was prosperous, while the procurement of other rice seeds had come to the end. The price of rice seeds remained stable.

Statistics show that the prices of hybrid cotton seeds and conventional cotton seeds slightly declined YoY. The soybean seed price averaged USD1.07/kg (RMB7.28/kg), the wheat seed prices fluctuated and the price of potato seeds remained stable in early May 2017.

In 2016, the seed sales of Zhongnongfa seed reached USD115.44 million. The sales of wheat seeds, corn seeds and rice seeds hit USD 49.87 million (RMB339.54 million), USD24.42 million (RMB166.26 million), and USD21.78 million (RMB148.32 million) respectively.

According to 1,686 price samples, NATESC announced that China's corn seed price slightly fell YoY in early May 2017.

On 10 May, 2017, the MOA announced to conduct 2017 special inspection over GM corn seedlings at production bases. This inspection will focus on GMO and production qualification of seeds breeding bases.
