According to the Measures for the Approval of Key Crop Varieties of Agricultural and Rural Department of Guangdong Province, key crop varieties passed first examination in Guangdong Province in 2020 was released on 31 Aug., 2020 for 30-days (from 1 Sept. to 30 Sept., 2020) public review. 96 rice varieties and 12 corn varieties were included.

According to China Customs, MoM increase was seen in export of vegetable seed in Aug., 2020 while the import decreased MoM. China exported 212,226 kg of vegetable seed in August, 2020, with the value of USD5,006,279, up by 50.50% and 54.42% MoM, respectively. A total of 450,4251 kg of vegetable seed were imported to China in Aug., 2020, with the value of USD13,024,201 that down by 32.65% MoM, respectively.

According to China Customs, China's import and export of corn seed in Aug., 2020 both went down MoM. Specifically, China imported 132 kg of corn seed in Aug., 2020, with the value of USD2,496, down significantly by 89.62% and 80.52% MoM. China exported 14,625kg of corn seed in this month, with the value of USD29,250, down by 67.52% and 68.80% MoM.

On 25 Sept., at the onsite observation of yield test of close-planting and high-yield corn by whole-mechanized and green technology in Qitai, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the corn expert guidance group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs measured the yield of the high-yield demonstration field of close-planting and high-yield corn of the Cultivation and Physiology Innovation team of the Institute of Crop Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

On 29 Aug., a symposium on Grass Breeding in Space was held in Lanzhou City, in which representatives of China Manned Space Engineering Office handed over the grass seeds and notarial certificates carried by the new-generation manned spacecraft test ship to Lanzhou Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Began in the 1980s, China's space breeding program has made more than 200 new space-breeding varieties that have passed national, provincial and ministerial evaluation up to now. And it is estimated to have created a direct economic scale of more than RMB200 billion.

On 16 Sept., Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held a press conference, in which experts from Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences reported the production status of grain under the impact of typhoon. This year, the planting area of grain crops in Heilongjiang Province exceeds 14.37 million ha (215.5 million mu), up by 3,333 ha (500,000 mu) over last year. Although there have been three consecutive typhoons since late Aug. and some plots of crops have been lodging, the overall impact is limited. At present, all kinds of crops have entered late ripening stage and some have entered full ripening stage, and the yield has been formed. Large-area harvest will start in about 10 days. According to field survey and analysis conducted by experts, a bumper harvest will be achieved in Heilongjiang Province this year.

On 2 Sept., 2020, the Department of Crop Production of Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China issued the list of major crop varieties that have been approved by Hubei Province on 31 Aug., 2020 for 15-days public review (from 2 Sept. to 22 Sept., 2020), according to the Measures for the Approval of Key Crop Varieties and Nomenclature Requirements for Agricultural Plant Varieties. 178 varieties such as 99 rice varieties, 47 corn varieties, 12 wheat varieties, 8 cotton varieties and 12 soybean varieties were included in the list.

Listed seed enterprises successively released semi-annual reports at the end of Aug. In H1 of 2020, business pressures of these seed enterprises increased obviously due to continuously fierce competition in seed industry plus the impact of COVID-19. Specifically, 6 of the 9 enterprises achieved profits in H1 of the year. In particular, DBN achieved a net profit of more than USD130 million (nearly RMB900 million), an increase of over 25 times. But 3 seed enterprises experienced losses. Among them, Longping High-Tech lost about USD10.80 million (RMB74 million), Dunhuang Seed and Zhongnongfa Seed lost USD4.67 million (RMB32 million) and USD1.31 million (RMB9 million).
