China's export volumes of crop seeds increased at first and then fell down during 2014 and 2017, while the export values kept decreasing. Both the import volumes and values fluctuated but showed an overall downward trend during the same time frame. In this context, China's seed imports exceeded exports in 2014–2017, with the annual trade deficit in 2017 reaching USD217 million.

On 7 May, 2018, many farmers came all the way to the International All-Quality Agricultural Means of Production Trade Market (Seed Only), which is located in Xinjiang's Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, for the corn seed named Xinyu 85. This seed boasts strong adaptability, good stability and fine resistance to diseases, drought and lodging. Its corn stalk may stay green when the corn is harvestable, which may be used as green-feed.

In early May 2018, Chongqing Municipality unveiled 41 authorised major crop seed varieties, comprising 20 rice, 19 corn and 2 soybean seed breeds.

In late April 2018, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region announced 114 authorised major crop seed varieties, including 96 corn, 9 rice, 6 soybean and 3 wheat breeds.

On 23 April, 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China briefed the operation of the agricultural and rural economies in Q1 2018. During this period, the averaged wholesale price of corn in key producing areas rose by 18.5% YoY. However, the problem regarding the oversupply of corn has yet to be solved fundamentally. Still, the inventories are relatively large.

On 26 April, 2018, BASF and Bayer signed an agreement on the further acquisition of the business and assets which the latter intended to strip off, so as to finish the latter's plan to acquire Monsanto. Prior to this, the two sides signed an agreement in Oct. 2017.
