The 3rd Preliminary Review Meeting of the 10th Liaoning Provincial Crop Variety Review Meeting in 2019 has wrapped up. Altogether 264 corn varieties, 52 rice varieties, 23 soybean varieties, and 6 wheat varieties and 4 cotton varieties passed the preliminary review, and the results were put out for public review on 9 Jan., 2020.

The beginning of Jan., 2020 witnessed two pieces of good news for China's domestic corn. First, Han Jun, one of China's trade representatives in the China-US trade negotiations, and deputy director of the China Agricultural Affairs Office, confirmed that the import quotas for China's staple foods (wheat, rice, and corn) will not be adjusted. Second, China's total import quota on corn in 2020 will remain at 7.20 million tonne

In 2019, China's total grain output was 663.84 million tonnes, up by 5.94 million tonnes or 0.90% YoY.

On 19 and 20 Dec., the NATEC held a meeting on the demonstration and appraisal of the crop seed certification scheme in Beijing. The meeting was attended by over 30 representatives, including 13 leading experts, a dozen of quality control experts from 10 seed companies including Hubei Seed Group Co., Ltd., and 11 government officials from Hubei Seed Station. They evaluated the Crop Seed Certification Scheme (draft) at the meeting.

In Dec., 2019, NATESC held the autumn regular meeting on China's supply and demand of crop seeds in 2019, reporting the actual harvest of seeds for spring and summer sowing crops, and the current status of seed producing for autumn and winter growing crops, and analysing the production, and supply and demand of crop seeds for 2020.

From 11 to 12 Dec., 2019, NATESC brought together experts from the national plant protection system, research institutes units and universities to analyse and discuss the trend of major crop insects and diseases in China in 2020. Based on the analysis of the initial population of the diseases and pests, the distribution of vegetable varieties, cultivation models, and weather conditions, it's predicted that there will be heavier occurrence of major crop pests and diseases across the nation in 2020 than in 2019, with a total of approximately 30 million ha (4.50 billion mu) of land expected to be affected.

China exported 592,971 kg of vegetable seed in Nov., 2019, up by 73.49% MoM. The import value stood at USD19,177,127, down by 14.91%. China imported 1,333,645 kg vegetable seed in Nov., with the value of USD29,477,014, down by 142.94% and 154.50% MoM.

In Nov., China imported 279 tonnes of corn seed with the value of USD11,320, both of which showed a MoM decline. China exported 314,500 tonnes of corn seed with the value of USD1,318,875 in Nov. Notably, export volumes of corn seed in Sept. and Oct. were zero.

On the morning of 10 Jan., 2020, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council held the 2019 National Science and Technology Award Conference in Beijing. A total of 296 projects and 12 experts were selected for the 2019 Awards, of which 39 were agricultural science and technology projects. The Cultivation and Application of Zhongdan 808 and Zhongdan 909, a project led by Huang Changling team from the Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was presented the Second Prize of Advancement in National Science and Technology for its contributions to China's seed industry and food security.

On 8 Jan., 2020, CAAS released the top ten advancements in agricultural technology of 2019 at its annual conference, including hornless yak, hybrid rice seed clones, and architecture of African swine fever. Altogether 7 seed-related technologies are on the list.

On 30 Dec., 2019, MOA issued the catalogue of GMOs granted the safety certificate, with altogether 192 plant varieties included. Among them, GM corn occupies 2 slots, namely, DBN9936, an insect resistant and herbicide resistant corn variety, with Beijing Dabeinong as the applier, and Shuangkang 12-5, with Hangzhou Ruifeng and Zhejiang University as the applier.
