In recent years, some achievements have been made in cultivating new crop varieties in China. For now, the coverage rate of improved crop varieties has been more than 96%, and the planting area of varieties independently bred accounts for over 95%. Improved varieties provide significant support for successive grain harvests and stable production and supply of agricultural products. However, there is still a gap in independent innovation ability of seed industry between China and developed countries, especially in core technology innovation. Therefore, China has made it clear that seed industry should be taken as the key task in tackling problems in agricultural science and technology and promoting modernization of agriculture and rural areas, and the construction of a modern seed industry system with Chinese characteristics should be accelerated during the 14th 5-Year Plan period, so as to continuously enhance the level of agricultural improved varieties.
