On 14 June, 2017, China announced a list of 18 bio-safety certificates of agricultural GMOs for imports that had been approved in 2017. Agricultural crops involved in this list include corn, soybean, rapeseed, cotton and sugar beet.

Wugu 318 and Wugu 305, bred by Gansu Wugu, passed the national variety certification along with another 6 species that are suitable for mechanised harvest. So far, 6 corn species from Gansu Province have been approved in this certification.

On 20 July, 2017, the China National Committee for Crop Variety Certification issued the National Crop Variety Certification Standards, involving major crops like rice, wheat, corn, cotton, and soybean. Specific standards are offered in 3 classifications: stably high-yield varieties, environmentally friendly & high quality varieties, and specialty varieties.

In 2016, Guangxi Wanchuan exported 1,995 tonnes of crop seeds to ASEAN countries in total, including 1,200 tonnes of hybrid rice seeds, 600 tonnes hybrid corn seeds and 195 tonnes of vegetable seeds. It achieved an overall export value of USD6.70 million (RMB45 million) in 2016 and is likely to perform better in 2017.

On 24 July, 2017, the National Forum of Directors of Agriculture Bureaus was held by the MOA in Beijing. Zhang Yanqiu, head of the Bureau of Seed Management, pointed out during the meeting that China would accelerate reform of the seed industry in four aspects, including optimism of seed variety approval system, speeding up breeding of special species, supporting seed enterprises and building data-based supervision mechanism to control illegal seed breeding.

The newly revised Standards for Approval of Key Crop Varieties (State-level) has been officially implemented. Compared with the old version, this one divides key crop varieties into three categories, varieties of high and stable yield, species that are environmentally friendly and of high quality and special varieties. This species approval system no longer take output as the only criterion for assessment, which spells the development of a classified and diversified approval system.
