Chinese dairy sales were considerably depressed due to the COVID-19 spread, and are expected to fall 20%–40% in H1. Producers without a long-term supply contracts have been forced to dispose of milk and cull cows.

In 2019, sales of the main Chinese dairy processors in aggregate rose 10.2% YoY to USD56.5 billion (RMB394.7 billion); sales costs reached USD43.8 billion (RMB306.1 billion), up 11.3%; and total profits grew 61.4% to USD5.4 billion (RMB37.9 billion). Liquid dairy products became less important in the overall business mix.

On 17 March, Hebei Province outlined subsidies for local dairying and dairy processing, aiming to become China's largest IF producer by 2022 with raw milk and dairy product outputs of up to 6 million tonnes and 5 million tonnes respectively.

As COVID-19 has slowed in China, dairy sales have recovered, but negative impacts on the industry remain. The imbalance between milk supply and demand will grow further, with milk prices likely to fall and rise, increasing imports as a result. At the same time, E-commerce operation, new retailing, and other innovative sales modes are expected to turn into the key sales approaches of dairy companies.

Whilst New Hope Dairy announced 14.1% and 0.3% growth respectively in its sales and net profits for 2019, Maiquer's net profits increased by 100.3%.

On 29 February, Yantang Dairy announced that its sales and net profits for 2019 reached USD212.2 million (RMB1.5 billion) and USD17.5 million (RMB122.5 million) respectively, in turn increasing by 14.2% and 190.3%.
