At the "2020 Yili Global Partner Conference" on 5–20 December, Yili proudly announced that its liquid dairy sales exceeded USD2.9 billion (RMB20 billion) in 2019. It also signed an organic milk project on 28 December with the People's Government of Bayannur, Inner Mongolia to jointly build a world-class organic and premium milk base with investments of USD4.3 billion (RMB30 billion).

Statistics from China's MOA on 1 January show the average raw milk price for the 1st week of January (across Inner Mongolia, Hebei and other 8 key milk producing areas) rose 6.4% YoY to USD0.57/kg (RMB3.83/kg), scarcely changed from previous week. Conversely, prices of corn and bean pulp feeds dropped.

The China-US phase 1 trade deal newly signed on 15 January will focus in sectors of intellectual property, technology transfer, agriculture and financial services. Market access is further enabled for US IF and some dairy products, but impact on the Chinese market will be limited for now.

On 31 December, Xinjiang Tianrun announced its proposal to raise up to USD64.6 million (RMB450 million) to build a 40 t/d milk beer plant and a 3,000-head dairy demonstration farm to boost its growth prospects.

On 28 December, China's MOA and MEE jointly issued Guiding Opinions on Promoting Farmland Fertilisation by Livestock Manure and Legally Enhancing Treatment of Livestock Pollution, aimed at improving the level of manure recycling in the livestock sector, making it more environmentally sustainable. Meanwhile, 10 case studies were highlighted, showcasing where crop farming and livestock breeding have been successfully combined.

On 6 January, Mengniu bought into Milkground Food for USD40.2 million (RMB280 million) and increased its investments in Milkground Food's subsidiary Ground Dairy for USD66.1 million (RMB460 million), expanding its share of the domestic cheese market. China still achieves only 0.1kg per capita cheese consumption per year, a figure set to rise.

Shanghai has achieved the highest pass rates in the country's key city food checks, and recent pass rates on local dairy product and IF spot checks were up to 99.7% and 100% respectively in Q1–Q3 2019. Implementing the national approach, the Shanghai Government issued 2 related policies in December 2019 .

According to the Provisional Import Tariff Rate and Other Tariff Rate Adjustment Plan for 2020, some dairy products (including cheese, butter and milk powder) have incurred lower temporary import tariff rates since 1 January. Particularly, imported IF with only 5% taxes will be more attractive on the market. The new rates will apply throughout 2020.
