In China, corn seeds have a relatively high market value. According to data
from the Bureau of Seed Management of the Ministry of Agriculture of the
People’s Republic of China, the total market value of the 7 major crop seeds
(corn, rice, wheat, soybean, cotton, oilseed rape and potato) adds up to about
USD12.39 billion (RMB80 billion). In particular, corn seeds account for 33%,
reaching USD4.40 billion (RMB28.40 billion).

Attracted by such a huge market value, foreign seed enterprises vigorously
promote their corn seed products in China, hoping to capture more market
shares. According to insiders, there are many foreign corn varieties promoted in
the Chinese market. To be more specific, outstanding varieties include:
- From DuPont Pioneer in the US
DuPont Pioneer mainly promotes its Xianyu335, Xianyu696, Xianyu38P05,
Xianyu508, Xianyu32D22 and Xianyu698 in China. The promoting area of these varieties
in China was predicted to surpass 2.93 million ha (44 million mu) in 2015,
accounting for about 8.0% of the market shares.
- From KWS in Germany
KWS mainly promotes its Demeiya1, Demeiya2, Demeiya3, KWS2564, KWS3376, KX9384
and KX1568 in China. The promoting area of these varieties in China was about
1.27 million ha (19 million mu) in 2015, accounting for about 3.5% of the
market shares. It is worth noting that among super early corn varieties, its
Demeiya1 and Demeiya2 accounted over 70.0% of the market shares.
- From Chia Tai Group in Thailand
Chia Tai Group mainly promotes Zhengda999, Zhengda12, Zhengda619, Zhengda808
and Zhengda666 in China. These varieties were quite popular in Southwest and
Northwest China. The planting area of these varieties in Southwest and
Northwest China in 2015 accounted for 4% of the total in these regions in 2015.
- From China Seed International Seed Co., Ltd.
China Seed International Seed Co., Ltd. mainly promotes corn varieties from
Monsanto Company, such as Dika008, Dika007, Dika516 and Dika517. These
varieties were quite popular in China. In particular, Dika008 is popular in
tropical region, Dika516 is popular in Northeast and Dika517 in popular in
summer corn planting area in the Yellow-Huaihe-Haihe Rivers Plain region.
- From Syngenta AG
Syngenta AG mainly promotes Syngenta 408 in mid-mature planting area in
Northeast China and Syngenta 901 in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region in China.
