Description:

Yellow phosphorus, the second largest consumer of phosphorus ore, an irreplaceable and non-renewable resource and closely related to people’s life, constitutes about 15% of phosphorus ore consumption in China.

China owns the largest capacity and output of yellow phosphorus in the world. However, Overcapacity has emerged as an eminent problem in Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in recent years. For example China’s capacity in 2008 is about double the size of the global demand, which is only about 800,000-900,000 tonnes every year. That suggests a very low operating rate of China’s yellow phosphorus industry about one third of its capacity during 2003-2008. What are reasons for the low operating rate, or why Chinese yellow phosphorus producers expand their capacity to such a large scale?

In China, like several years ago, most yellow phosphorus was consumed by thermal phosphoric acid and phosphorus trichloride in 2008. However, the consumption structure of yellow phosphorus is changing every year. The yellow phosphorus consumption by thermal phosphoric acid has been shrinking by consumption share in recent years, while the share of yellow phosphorus in phosphorus trichloride has been increasing. What other changes have taken place to Chinese yellow phosphorus consumption and what have driven such changes to happen?

The price of Chinese yellow phosphorus, closely related to supply/demand dynamics, changing with global economic environment, seasons, national policy etc., has experienced great fluctuations in 2008, with the highest reaching USD3,504/t and the lowest dropping to USD1,606/t.

It is estimated that the years of exploiting remaining for yellow phosphorus in China are only 30, so China is adjusting industrial structure of yellow phosphorus for saving phosphorus resource. What’s the influence on resource supply, manufacturers, capacity and output of Chinese yellow phosphorus caused by adjusting industrial structure?

In this report, you can find the answers to all the above questions.

Besides, this report also tries to find answers to the following questions:

 What is the resource supply situation in China for yellow phosphorus industry?
 How is the production situation of Chinese yellow phosphors? The production part covers capacity & output, manufacturers’ situation, price, existing problems, cutting edge technologies, comparison of production cost, competitive strategy, etc.
 How is yellow phosphorus consumed and what changes have taken place to the consumption in recent years?
 What are the development trends about capacity, output, manufacturers, resource supply, consumption situation in 2009-2018, based on large numbers of first-hand information and advanced forecast method?
 What is IE analysis of Chinese yellow phosphorus in 2008?
 What is SWOT analysis of top 5 manufacturers of Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in Jan. 2009?
 What are experts’ comments on market opportunity of Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in the following years?

With this report, you will gain a complete and in-depth impression of Chinese yellow phosphorus industry, its past, present and future.

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2009 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

 Raw materials

Electricity will still restrict the development of yellow phosphorus production while coke will not. This situation will not change in the future.

China’s phosphorus resource is the second largest in the world with xxx million tonnes while most of it is not rich. Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan and Hunan capture XXX% of China’s total resource with actual economic value. Chinese government issues some policies to restrict export of phosphorus ore now.

It’s estimated that years of exploitation remaining of Chinese phosphorus resource (average content=XXX%) will be about XXX years, and restriction on exploiting phosphorus resource in China will be stricter in the following years.

 Capacity, output and consumption

Overcapacity has emerged as an eminent problem in Chinese yellow phosphorus industry in recent years. Chinese yellow phosphorus capacity is about xxt/a in 2008 with operation rate of only XXX%. The capacity is expected to grow a little over next ten years to 2018, while output of yellow phosphorus in China is expected to keep relatively stable.

Though China is the largest yellow phosphorus exporter, the export volume of yellow phosphorus will reduce Since 2005, Chinese government has been raising export tariff of yellow phosphorus, which even reached XXX% in Dec. 2008, for protecting Chinese phosphorus resource. In the following years, Chinese government will continue restricting the export of yellow phosphorus and that of low value-added phosphorus products.

Consumption structure of yellow phosphorus in China will not change much in the following years. However, with the growth of wet-process phosphoric acid, yellow phosphorus consumption in thermal phosphoric acid industry will decrease. But its consumption in phosphorus trichloride industry will increase, stimulated by the development of glyphosate and other organophosphorus pesticides. As a result, it is estimated that the demand of yellow phosphorus will have a slight increase in ‘09~’13 with CAGR of XXX%. Then, it will decrease slowly in ‘14~’18 with CAGR of XXX%.

 Manufacturers

Chinese production of yellow phosphorus is concentrated in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Hubei. All of the top XXmanufacturers of yellow phosphorus respectively in the four provinces have their own phosphorus mines, and have ability to integrate production resources and industrial chain. These manufacturers are more competitive and will get more profit in phosphorus market than other small-scale manufacturers.

Integration among manufacturers is an inevitable trend for resource optimization and more profit. In addition, deep processing and comprehensive utilization of wastes are also necessary to address the increasing production cost for yellow phosphorus manufacturers in China.

 Price

The price hike of yellow phosphorus in China since Nov. 2007 is mainly caused by the decrease of yellow phosphorus supply, to be exact, the supply from Yunnan province, with Yunnan government restricting electricity supply to yellow phosphorus enterprises.

Price of yellow phosphorus fluctuates much in 2008, which is influenced by such factors as insufficient supply, the earthquake hitting Sichuan in May 2008, Beijing Olympic Games, increasing yellow phosphorus export tariff, global financial crisis etc.
