Description:

Sulfanilic acid is an indispensable chemical intermediate widely used in dyestuff, superplasticizers, fluorescent whitening agent and pigment. Having produced for over 20 years, China has become a major production and exporting country of sulfanilic acid in the world.

China had 23 active sulfanilic acid producers, with total capacity of 90,000t/a and total output of 22,215 tonnes in 2008. Major producers include Hebei Dongfa, Tianjin Yueguo, etc.

Most sulfanilic acid produced in China is for export, which has accounted for over 70% of China’s total output in the past five years. Export of refined sulfanilic acid kept increasing with CAGR of 26% in 2004~2007, but declined sharply since 2008 due to the global financial crisis. How is the detailed situation of China’s sulfanilic acid export in 2008 and 2009? With disadvantages such as serious overcapacity, low operating rate of production facility, limited domestic market and low profit, where is the future of Chinese sulfanilic acid industry? Answers are available in the updated report.

Besides, basing on the original report finished in early 2008, CCM has carried out in-depth research and analysis on each active producer, as well as the whole industry to figure out the future development trend. Aspects as follows have been updated:

 Import and export analysis from 2008 to H1 2009
 Impacts of the global financial crisis on production and export
 Latest consumption situation in China
 Industry competition and structure analysis
 Latest first-hand data of each producer
 Active end users which is identified by telephone interview

For deeper research and analysis, CCM has also focused on:
 Export/Import trend
 Domestic consumption trend
 Raw material supply and price trend in the past five years
 Production situation and future development trend

With the information covered in the report, readers can see the general production and consumption situation of sulfanilic acid in China and realize that investment in China's already oversupplied sulfanilic acid industry doesn't seem to be a rational choice. It is recommended that cooperating with related enterprises to develop new products which are common in the overseas but are desperately needed in China may be a new way out.

Executive Summary

Sulfanilic acid, an indispensable chemical intermediate, has wide applications in dyestuff, superplasticizers, fluorescent whitening agents and pigment.

Having produced sulfanilic acid for over XX years, China has become a major production and exporting country of sulfanilic acid in the world.

Most sulfanilic acid produced in China is exported to overseas. China’s export volume of refined sulfanilic acid had taken up XX% and XX% respectively of China’s total refined sulfanilic acid output in 2007 and 2008. China’s refined sulfanilic acid is mainly exported to countries in Southeast Asia and South America, such as India, Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico. Export volume to the traditional export destinations, such as EU, has gradually reduced under anti-dumping measures. Besides, the global financial crisis has also greatly reduced the export to EU.

Global financial crisis depressed the export significantly. The global financial crisis broke out in Sep. 2008 was the key factor significantly reducing China’s refined sulfanilic acid export and seriously depressing domestic production. From 2004 to 2007, the export volume had kept increasing rapidly with CAGR of XX%, despite the anti-dumping measures adopted by the EU and US. However, the export had reduced by XX% in 2008, due to the soaring product price and the global financial crisis. The global financial crisis has also changed the producers’ market strategy and accelerated the process of selecting the superior and eliminating the inferior in Chinese sulfanilic acid industry.

Many barriers may disturb China’s sulfanilic acid industry development.
 Superfluous capacity
 Low operating rate
 Low profit
 Simple and mature technology
 Limited domestic market
 Producers can not self-supply raw material

These factors greatly influence China’s sulfanilic acid industry development in the future. Besides, Chinese government has paid more attention to environmental protection, which may increase the production cost and further decrease the profit. Some producers have stopped production due to the stricter environmental policy.

Sulfanilic acid price is hampered by raw material cost. Aniline, an important oil product, is the key raw material of sulfanilic acid. In a sense, sulfanilic acid price in China follows the international oil price most time. With stable international oil price, sulfanilic acid price kept correspondingly stable before 2008. However, the price almost doubled in the first nine months of 2008 and then dropped by XX in the following three month, due to the price fluctuation of raw material price caused by fluctuating crude oil price and the global financial crisis.
