Description:

 

With rapid development in recent years, China has become the largest PF producer in the world, as well as the world’s biggest PF consumer. Its PF production capacity has reached 289,000/t in 2008, up 79.5% over the previous year. And both China’s capacity and consumption of PF are estimated to take up over 50% of the global total currently. 

The report mainly focuses on the following problems:
 The production situation of PF in China: including major producers, development trend of production technology, pricing of PF in recent years and etc.
 Changes in China’s import and export of PF in recent years.
 Consumption structure of PF in China in recent years.
 Factors influencing the development of PF.

Chinese PF industry is greatly influenced by development of its downstream industries, especially glyphosate in herbicide. At present, there are 2 major production pathways in glyphosate production , namely AEA pathway and IDA pathway. Using PF as raw material is only suitable for AEA pathway.

Affected by global financial crisis, the demand for glyphosate has kept slumping since the latter half of 2008, as well as the price of glyphosate. Further more, owing to environmental problems, AEA pathway in the production of glyphosate is facing increasingly intense competition from IDA pathway. Meanwhile, China’s PF industry has seen signs of overcapacity in recent years. How these factors will influence PF development in China in the future?

Executive Summary

Production and Producers

Nowadays, China’s PF capacity has been expanding fast, reaching XXXXt/a in the end of 2008, increasing by XXXX% over the previous year. What’s more, the capacity of PF production lines under construction is XXXXt/a at present.

Affected by global financial crisis, the growth of PF demand and output has slowed down since H2 2008, although PF output is expected to continuously increase in China in next few years. By May 2009, total PF output in China is around XXXX tonnes, only up XXXX% year on year. And total PF output is predicted to be XXXX tonnes in 2009 and XXXX tonnes in 2010, up XXXX% and XXXX% year on year respectively.

There are XXXX active PF producers in China by May 2009. XXXX producers have suspended the PF production and XXXX producers is expanding or planning to expand their PF capacity.

Pricing

After the soaring in H1 2008, PF price has kept slumping since later half of 2008, especially after the Beijing Olympic Games, following the price tumble of glyphosate and methanol. 

Production technology of PF in China
The traditional PF technology in China is rake-drying method which uses 37% industrial formaldehyde as raw material. Chinese PF producers have also introduced foreign technology in the production of PF. The foreign technology adopts 50%-55% industry formaldehyde as raw material.

Import & Export

Since 2006, import volume of PF has been gradually falling. In 2008, China imported about XXXX tonnes PF from abroad, down XXXX% over the previous year.

In general, export volume of PF has witnessed stable growth in recent years because of its increasing output and quality improvement of PF. But in 2008, affected by global financial crisis, China’s export volume of PF totaled only XXXX tonnes, down XXXX% over the previous year.

Consumption & Demand

PF is mainly consumed in two fields in China, namely agrochemical industry and resin industry with consumption volume accounting for XXXX% and XXXX% of the total in 2008, respectively.

In 2008, China’s PF consumption volume was XXXX tonnes, increasing by XXXX% compared with that in 2007. XXXX tonnes were consumed in agrochemical industry and XXXX tonnes were consumed in resin industry.
