Executive Summary

At present, global sorbitol production center has shifted from Europe and North America to Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific has become the largest sorbitol production region in the world by 2008.

With low costs of labour, land and raw material, sorbitol enterprises and investors from developed countries, such as Roquette, tend to build factories and seek partners in Asia Pacific. Under this trend, some joint ventures adopting advanced technology and operation method are established. These joint ventures have promoted sorbitol industry development in this region.

There are XXX sorbitol producers with total capacity of XXX t/a and they produced XXX tonnes sorbitol in 2008. Among these producers, China’s Jilin Changchun Dacheng Industrial Group Company Ltd. has the largest capacity, XXX t/a in 2008; Indonesia’s PT. Sorini Agro Asia Corporation TBK produced the most sorbitol in 2008, with output of XXX tonnes, and Japanese Nikken Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. captured the largest market value with XXX output value in 2008.

The three countries, China, Japan and Indonesia, where the above three producers are located, have held the most important position in sorbitol supply/production in this region, each having their own characteristics. China is the largest sorbitol producer in Asia Pacific; Japan, whose sorbitol market is the largest by value, produces the largest volume of solid sorbitol, the higher grade product; and Indonesia is a net exporter with very tiny domestic consumption.

Sorbitol industry in China and Indonesia both is export-oriented, while Japan and Australia are the two key sorbitol import states in this region.

With oversupply situation, Asia Pacific has witnessed larger sorbitol export volume than its import, with large quantities exported to other regions in the world.

At the same time, Asia Pacific is the largest sorbitol consumption region in the world, with key players from sorbitol’s most important downstream industries have almost all set up production plants in Asia Pacific. In 2008, XXX tonnes sorbitol, more than XXX of global total, was consumed in this region.

Vitamin C, as an important sorbitol application, consumes the largest volume of sorbitol in Asia Pacific, since China, the global production center of Vitamin C, is located in this region. However, as sorbitol used in food industry is more expensive than that in Vitamin C, the most valuable market of sorbitol is actually food industry, not Vitamin C, though the latter has the largest consumption volume in Asia Pacific given the fact that the world Vitamin C production center is located in this region.

In developed countries of Asia Pacific, such as Japan, South Korea and Australia, sorbitol application currently has witness uptrend in food industry with growing economy and improving living standard.

In developing countries of Pakistan, India and Indonesia, most sorbitol is used in DHP (Daily Health Products) production, with the downstream products mainly exported.

With lower costs of labor and material, developing countries in this region have becoming increasingly attractive to investors as ideal places to set up sorbitol production plants, as the competitiveness of products produced in these countries will be strong. Besides, for sorbitol traders seeking for cheap sorbitol to export developed countries, opportunities are also there to be found in these developing countries in Asia Pacific.

In the future, with technology improvement, Asia Pacific’s sorbitol will be more widely applied in pharmaceuticals and high-tech chemical synthesis industry, like developed countries in other regions.

With resources advantage, a growing number of sorbitol enterprises will be jointly established in Asia Pacific, especially in developing countries. And many producers will expand capacity and increase output to satisfy global demand. Asia Pacific will become the global sorbitol supply center, with the annual output predicted to reach nearly XXX million tonnes by 2014.
