Description:

With 300~500 times the sweetness of sugar, saccharin, which can’t be absorbed by human body and keeps stable in the production of food, has been approved for food use in over 100 countries. Owing to the safety concerns of saccharin used as food additive, the global demand for saccharin used as food additive has been decreasing in recent years.

As the largest saccharin supplier, China’s output of saccharin accounts for over 80% of the world’s total. In order to boost its sugar industry, Chinese government has restricted the domestic production and sales of saccharin since the end of 1990s. Because of the effective supervision on saccharin industry, the domestic output and consumption of saccharin in China have significantly decreased in recent years.

The report has mainly disclosed the following problems:

How does Chinese government supervise saccharin industry? And how will these policies evolve in the near future?

What is the production situation of saccharin in China in recent years?

What is the consumption situation of saccharin in China, including the consumption structure, major downstream industries and their development situation, and application characteristics of saccharin in each industry?

Facing the competition from other high intensity sweeteners, how will the domestic saccharin market change in the next 5 years? You will find the answers in this report.

Executive Summary

(Note: The following summary is based on the situation in 2008 and maybe different to what it is nowadays. Please be noted.)

As the largest saccharin supplier, China’s output of saccharin accounts for over 80% of the world’s total. In order to boost its sugar industry, Chinese government has restricted the domestic production of saccharin since the end of 1990s, and the production of saccharin in China has kept stable in recent years.

- Export of China’s saccharin

Since Chinese government has strictly restricted the domestic sale of saccharin, domestic saccharin producers mainly depend on overseas market, with annual export of saccharin accounting for 70%~80% of the total output in China. The total export volume of saccharin was xxxx tonnes in 2007, almost equal to that of 2006. Due to the decreasing supply of saccharin, the export volume of saccharin has declined significantly in 2008, and the accumulative export in Jan.~Jul. 2008 is xxxx tonnes.

- Domestic consumption of saccharin

The excessive use of saccharin was common in China in the 1990s. Since China has restricted the domestic sale of saccharin since the end of 1990s, the domestic consumption of saccharin has decreased rapidly. At present, the major end use segments of saccharin include food, toothpaste and electroplating, and the 3 fields have accounted for over xx% of the domestic consumption of saccharin in recent years.

- Policy on the production and use of saccharin

In order to promote sugar industry and reduce environment pollution caused by the production of saccharin, Chinese government has strictly supervised the production and use of saccharin in China since the end of 1990s. State Development and Reform Commission is responsible for the supervision of the whole saccharin industry in China. Since June 2008, the new hygienic standard for uses of food additives GB2760-2007 has substituted for GB 2760-1996.

- Forecast on China’s saccharin supply and demand

Because of the strict supervision of Chinese government on the production and use of saccharin, China’s saccharin supply will maintain at the current level and the domestic demand for saccharin will increase slowly in the next few years. The sales of saccharin will still highly depend on the overseas market. The capacity of saccharin is forecasted to maintain at the current level. And the output of saccharin is expected to grow slowly with the CAGR of xx% in 2009~ 2013 and will reach xxxx tonnes in 2013.
